Code Reader
« on: 31 January 2012, 18:53:05 »

Looking to buy an inexpensive code reader.
Seen one that says is OBD II compliant -including VPW, PWM, ISO, KWP, 2000 protocols but not CAN protocols

Would this suit? About £45.

Your car is compliant, so pretty much anything will read codes.

But it's worth spending a few quid extra to get one that shows the live data.

Then, you can do reasonably sophisticated diagnosis rather than just "it's got a few codes showing". That's things like duff cranksensors(common on lots of cars, not just Omegas) DBW pedal sensors, failing coolant sensors and so on.

I've used an Autel maxiscan pretty much daily for the last 5 years and can't fault it. It's pretty  robust too. Can't remember which model, although it's undoubtedly been replaced.

Thanks
Apparently this does show live data
I've seen many that are basically an interface and USB cable with a cd that you use with a pc -the usual fleabay crap from the far east.
This one looks like a reasonable stand alone hand held effort with LCD display.
I'll keep looking.
