V6 hunting from cold/warm...
« on: 06 February 2012, 00:39:11 »

Hi all (3.0 MV6)

from start up cold or warm (sometimes doesnt do it) the car seems to hunt i.e revs dip slightly..

with my sidelights on you can clearly see lights dim for a second as revs fall & normal when it stops...

this lasts for roughly 30seconds to a minuite.... is this normal or what maybe the issue???

only other problum is when im driving if my heater is on speed 3 4 5 if revs are under 2000rpm heaters blast out the air at requested speed but if i go over 2500rpm or accelerate the fans slowdown... if i let off throttle they speed up again to normal????

is this connected sumhow??

ive tryed to attach a meter to check battery voltage to see if its the alternator... but sodz law when i want it to do it! it doesnt!!!

also if it is an alternator problum does a ex police car have a higher amp alternator fitted?? spec says 125amp....???

fluctuating revs can be a sign of poor alternator output, weak battery or as it was on mine the breathers starting to block up  :y

You have a vaccum leak.......hence the hunting revs and the fact that when you give it throttle (and the manifold vac drops accordingly), the heater changes its characteristic as most of its functions are vaccum actuated.

I would agree with Marks DTM Calib's initial assessment, check over the Vac system.  There are some good diagrams in Maint Guides (or is it FAQ) regarding Vac layout :y

adding to above,  alternator is not in an easy area to service , so first try with a good battery..  if lights still play up you need to service alternator ..

you must test the battery and charging  with ac and lights on..

Recently fitted a new bosch silver plus S5 battery 74ah 750a, because when i bought the car it had a tiny 45ah 300a battery on it & would only just start so that was soon ripped off!!!!

i will go & check the output readings from alternator now & let you know....

would i get an intermitant vaccume leak??? as some days like early today nothing...???

spray some carb cleaner around engine.. if idle changes there is vacuum leak.. also there is a solenoid behind the radiator which may also play with the idle..
