2000 Omega 2.5TD Gearbox issue
« on: 10 February 2012, 12:20:56 »

I gave the engine bay of me 2000 Omega 2.5TD a clean yesterday with a power hose. I think water got in somewhere it shouldnt have. The rev counter stopped working but has since come back. The car wont drive in 1,2,3 or D. It will drive in reverse and in D if I press he winter button. I drove it this morning in D with winter on and it stayed in 3rd for about 3 miles ten ran as normal up and down the gears no problem. But when I stop i goes back to no drive in 1,2,3 or D. Anybode got any ideas?

I'm thinking coincidence, and that the gearbox has just worn out.  How many miles has it done, and is it original gearbox?

the gearbox was perfect before I washed the engine bay. there is 230000 miles on th car and probably the same gearbox. It starts off in 3rd with the snow button on. Drives for a while in third with snow button on then starts working fine. goes through 2,3,4 no probelm. kick doen works fine. Onlyu when I stop it goes back to the same issue. i have to put it in D with the snow button on again to get going. Sounds like the controller for the gerabox is a bit funny.

Just spoke to a mechanic on the phone, he reckons the gearbox is in limp mode. Does that sound right

When you say it doesn't pull away, does it rev as if in neutral, or just hard to get moving?

when in 1,2,3 or D it just revs as in Neutral. The odd time it will start to move in D but very rarely. Will go into gear with snow button turned on then starts to run normal after a while stuck in 3rd

first thing is check the gearbox oil level correctly!!
if ok clean selector switch,
lastly convert to manual and avoid all the associated pain with a sludge pump!!

edit rpm counter driven from alternator so water probably got in there and dried out after a bit of a run

where abouts is the gear selector. I also noticed on my way home from work. if i get it going in D with the snow button on, i can turn the snow button off after around 25mph and the gearbox runs aas normal through the gears. problem only occurs again when i stop.

Jack up the front n/s(mind use axle stand) then go under the car and you will see the selector switch up near the top of the g/box.
I had a similar problem when we had snow. The slush went onto the selector and it would jerk rev its head off then gave up but when left for a while to dry out it was ok.
Also splashing through to many pudles would cause it to do the same.
I sprayed the selector with wd40 about once a month to help push the water out the same idea as what I used to do with a set of points :y
Don't power wash the engine again ;)

If memory serves me wright it's a job for a sludge pump(auto box) specialist as its in the guts of the box.
