Whats involed to convert 2.2 petrol to 2.5td
« on: 16 March 2012, 19:35:00 »

I have a 01 2.2petrol saloon omega. Headgasket is gone. Just wondering would it take much to drop a 2.5td engine into it.

I would say its easier to change the head gasket! Major work to change to diesel IMO  :y

As per above, would be less hassle to fix the head gasket on the petrol 2.2, then sell the car and buy a 2.5 diesel version.

Not being funny, but are you sure the head gaskets gone or is it something you've been told by a garage.  As there are stories on here quite often of problems being miss-diagnosed as something else :o
Can you elaborate on the problems you've had that may indicate that it's definitely the head gasket?.

Going back to the Petrol to Diesel conversion, it can be done, but it isn't a weekend job :o

Just for starters, the changes that I can think of that you would have to do would be;
Engine (obviously), gearbox, engine and gearbox (if auto) ECUs, the fuel tank and fuel lines, part or all of the engine wiring loom.  Not sure if the axle ratio on the 2.2 would be ideal for the 2.5 diesel power / torque band?

Don't want to put you off doing it, if that's the way you really want to go, but maybe worth finding out if anyone else has done it first to give you an idea of just how much work is involved ???

if you really want a diesel scrap your car and get a diesel. unless you have the time and money and the will to do a project  :y

as said though, get a proper diagnosis on that HG

Imagine it would be a mare.

Additionally, insurance may be an issue, depending on age, as 2.5td only fitted to UK cars up to 2000

It can be done, you would need a complete td as a doner car.
Things that need changed:

Main fuel input line as it is bigger in diesels
Change fuel tank, or cut the hole in filler neck bigger and change fuel pump in tank
Fit fuel filter and head
Change main power steering pipe
Change relay/fuse box and loom beside battery
Engine, loom and subframe, gearbox(manual is easier) prop shaft and diff(optional)
Front struts
Clocks/Instrument cluster
Oil cooler and intercooler need fitted
Throttle pedal/sensor

As for the wiring you could change the loom behind the dash, but the doner car would need to a facelift, or
If you have a bit of knowledge about wiring diagrams use the a Haynes manual to swap wires on plugs on x2 and x3. Plug x2 would need to be wired in from the diesel as it is different. I made a loom for my throttle sensor on my 3L conversion, but as the 2.2 has a throttle sensor you may be able to them wires.

There is a lot of work in this, but it can be done, and its not that difficult if you have the time.

Hello!

I keep on building on a 96 'opel omega 2.5 v6 to 95' 2.5 td.
Most are in place. Inclusive "drive by wire".

Wondering if anyone can tell me how the motor connector x2 x3 be switched?

Can not find the contacts in hayens diagrams.

Any help be greatly appreciated :)
