Talking numbers I saw a Mondeo the other day with the reg 746KW. Wishful thinking !

Takes me back to my childhood days of charging up capacitors on a 500 volt Megger and then giving them to my little brothers to play with.

ISTR the next step up from that was trying to make a Jacob's ladder with a big old paper in oil capacitor charged up by a line output transformer. Luckily we tried it round my mate's house and his parents kept finding digital clocks around the house that were stuck displaying 88:88 or other nonsense.  ::)

No, the next step up is a tesla coil....easily made if you have a handy supply of brake pipe  ::)

I should of course have said to use a power transistor capable of with standing 800+V and not a power Mosfet in this application..... :y

Have seen a couple of impressive demos but never got round to making one. Apparently to form the secondary you need a short length of 8" polyester Gas main (the yellow stuff you sometimes see offcuts of by the side of the road..)  ::) Ahem. So I'm told.

Brake line or microbore pipe for the primary as you say, and a neon sign transformer, some tank caps and a spark gap.

Ahh, yes. Good old BU208..

I must admit I'm ashamed that I never thought of this:

Jacob's ladder with added hairspray!

I`ve built a couple of HVTesla coils....`not solid state though; using a surplus overhead-line tranny and homemade Caps.....however, the spark-gap causes just a 'tad' too much interference locally  :-[ so can only run`once in a blue moon....`heaps of fun though! ;)

When you say "overhead line transformer" you don't mean what I think you mean, do you?  :o

;) If you mean steel-cased/oil-filled, 46Kv./230v and (ahem!) 'surplus to local utility-requirements'....then yes!
One has to be VERY careful of course!  ;D

Makes my suggestion of a neon sign transformer look a bit inadequate. :-[

You must be able to run one serious tesla coil from one of those.  :o

Oh Yes!  ::) .....`streamers up to 3-4 ft.!  :y

`though I must confess to frightening myself with it at times....`ripping the air apart makes a heck of a lot of noise.  :o

I`d play with it more, but the interference issue is problematic....I try to run it for the local-village show in August; `pleases the crowds!  ;D

I once worked with a chap who's trick was to hold on to a plug lead of a running engine then touch whoever walked past him on the back of the leg, he said he found the resultant scream and leap very gratifying.

Just discovered the front number plate is missing from my Wife's Corsa. There is no sign of broken plastic bolts, so it looks like some lowlife has unscrewed it.  How do we stop this trash ?

Ken

actually.... are you sure she didnt just prang it and lose the number plate??? ;D

Sounds like a very effective electric counter measures device.....the resulting RF must send receivers within a few miles pretty wappy!
