Any members know about mopeds?
« on: 13 September 2012, 13:44:01 »

Hi everyone - my son's Gilera runner 50cc needs attention - I want to take a look at the reeds under the inlet manifold but it's secured in using what looks like (arrgghh!) a RIVET of some kind - any idea what it is?

Can't plier it out, doesn't seem to be some form of cap (though I may be wrong) and it won't budge.

PIC - http://www.fent.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/runner1.jpg

Any help appreciated. Cheers.

Have you looked at the picture Ralf? Not sure how you could get any grip on that.

Does look like a rivet, normal bolt other side?

Guess drill it out? Might want to get a spare replacement bolt though!

That looks like a sheerbolt. need hammer and centre punch to undo.

Used to use a similar thing on steering locks on cars. Kinf of anti tamper device. But usually come undone ok. At least all the one's I have done have. Oh almost forgot, did have a failure on one.

Sheer bolts have normals heads which sheer off at a pre determined torque. like this http://www.lrseries.com/shop/product/listing/13679/100/1/51K4001L-STEERING-COLUMN-LOCK-ASSEMBLY-SHEAR-BOLT.html

maybe a nut on the other side,
could try and cut a slot in it and use large screwdriver
or might be able to grip it with mole grips

no nut on other side - it screws directly into the engine casing - I'll try mole grips and twisting - I can't understand why anyone would put a sheer bolt on there - I've taken a few of these mopeds apart and never come across it before.

Looks metal to me, being round think mole grips will slip like mad.

Looks like copper? Maybe file a flat edge to get some grip on it  :)

Have you got a welder? Could always weld a nut on the top?

That looks like a sheerbolt. need hammer and centre punch to undo.

Yup, I'll second that.

Maybe it's an anti-tamper measure so that the power rating can be guaranteed? (Aren't new riders etc limited in bhp these days?)

Anti tamper, to stop people increasing the HP of a 50cc, it maybe how the restrict its power for the UK market. Or if they do remove it, it is obvious it has been done if you put a normal bolt back in. Or maybe to do with warranty.

That takes me back. A school mate of mine had one. He removed the exhaust. Not deliberately, but he was knocked off it on the way home from school by our maths teacher's wife in her Morris Ital then left the scene without it due to the embarrassment so I carried the exhaust home and told him to come and get it if he wanted it back. ;D
