Be very careful regarding pre-load .. my diff failed completely some 18 months after the seal was replaced.

Not the fault of the seal or the workmanship, but because, for various reasons, the pre-load had to be "guessed" .. and the chances are that the "guess" was incorrect ...

I remember it well! But how can you check the pre-load properly?

IF .. big IF .. as it wasn't in my case .... the nut is done up tight  ie preload is set correctly .. mark with a scratch both the nut and the casing ...then count the turns you undo the nut. When you do the nut back up EXACTLY the same number of turns and line up the marks ... preload will now be as before.

In my case, if you remember .. the bloody nut was already loose !! So some "educated elbows" did a "best guess" ...  (2Woody's) ... for which I'm grateful .. but  it was probably not correct by the happenings of 18 months later ..

Yes very unfortunate, we can only assume someone had changed your seal previously, and not understood the requirement of the pre-load.

Had mine replaced by a certain young fella from Stoke a while back.

As the car was in the air on a 4 poster it was easy to see how the job is done.Large nut was marked with a scribe along with the exact position on the flange.Original tightness of nut was checked to ensure it hadnt been fiddled with before,then locking tab was folded down and nut carefully undone whilst counting flats and full turns as a back up.

Old seal was removed and new seal lubricated and fitted back into flange and position that nut was removed was replicated and count begain to get it all back to existing position..oil level checked and job done..all in about 1 hour although everything was done in Daz,s usual carefull way.

Hasnt lost a drop of oil since and no noises or rumbles and have covered over 15k since done.

I should really have done this job about 60k ago, bet there is sod all oil in there now
