Seems I have given myself a hernia somehow .

Anyone got any experience of the surgery where they put mesh in ? I had one on the other side done the old fashioned way which was rather agony afterwards but apparently the mesh repair doesn't always work?

I had an inguinal hernia repaired with mesh about 12 years ago. I couldn't believe it when they wheeled me in at 8am, cut a 5" hole in me under general anaesthetic, patched me up and sent me home at midday. Can't say it's given me any real trouble but there is still a bit of numbness around the scar

I've had an inguinal hernia for about five years. Haven't got time/inclination to have it done. Doesn't bother me and is a great excuse when people around me start moving heavy objects.

Pity its not close to your brain, you wouldn't notice any more numbness there.

Had two done. Left side several years ago, no problems. Right side, still slight numbness, and that gauze didn't work fully. Still a small hernia, re visited hosp. Sent a date for the op. turned up on the day, surgeon then decides the small remaining hernia is not worth bothering with.

Cover arranged at work, battled to get sick pay, to be told we won't bother. Great.

Bloody sore after though. Me Dad had keyhole surgery on his and was walking about the next day.

You can also have laser surgery and apparently you hardly notice any discomfort at all.......but i dont think you can get it on the NHS as its about £4k iirc

Had mine done in November  - had it done at a private hospital (but paid for by NHS).
Went in 3pm? and had it done under local (spine block), so was awake throughout.

Injections in spine was most painful bit.
Feeling that I MUST move my legs (when they were numbed) was most uncomfortable.
Could have been sent home same day, but talked them into overnight stay (cos I hadn't pee'd up to 8pm).

Took it VERY easy until xmas, then slowly building back up activity levels. First day of gym (2nd Jan) I managed 6 minutes on the step machine, 10 mins on the cross trainer, and 20mins on the tread mill.
WAS doing 30/60/90 before op, so reasonably fit going in to it.

Not allowed to do weights for six months, but apart from that, very little pain or discomfort.

The worst bit is thinking I'm perfectly fit and healthy and not being able to do stuff that I *can* do, but mustn't.
The failures in the op are usually due to not allowing the requred recovery time - the consultant I had said it's around 1% failure rate *IF* I don't overdo it.

I should finish by saying that my hernia was due to an incorrectly healed appensectomy scar (about 12in long), rather than any underlying problems - and I probably wouldn't have one at all if I hadn't gone back to work (lifting banana boxes full of book all day) a week after getting out of hospital.

Actually a line of 7 small eggs - about the size of quail eggs.
I actually had 11 hernias in a line where the muscle had torn between each stitch

I've heard a lot of scare stories, that's why mine is staying exactly where it is. Mate of mine had his done four times and it still popped out again. I told him they'd probably use chicken wire next time.

Read up on "strangulated hernia" for scare stories. You'll be booked in for it doing within the week.

I had two hernia operations within a year of each other nearly 10 years ago.  Both used the mesh repair method and there was no problem at all.  I was able to walk to the car park (slowly) within 5 hours of each operation and was back at work within 10 days each time.  I had to take it easy for a few weeks but there was absolutely no problem at all just a very small ridge of scar tissue on each side.
