That is when I joined the retail trade in 1968 that they were that price.  Back in 1957/8 I got that 8 for 1d, and that 1d was usually gained by collecting jam jars and selling them to the local off licence of the pub.  Remember Vamps the farthing to not go out of circulation until 1960 so for at least 3 years I as a child used them to buy sweets. You could really get so much more for a 1d in those days! ;D ;D :y :y :y :y

Obviously you must be younger than me ::) ::) ::) :D ;) ;)

You poor boy! :o :o :o :o  No freedom at 5!  Well I was lucky because our road had hardly any traffic on it then, and a short walk down the road with a penny or two in my hand had me arriving at the grocers with a range of sweets there. It was safe then; a bit different today for our five year olds. :(

   lets get all the bottles of "pop" back into glass and give a refund on the emptys. Stop a lot of littering.
No, what a silly idea, lets just make all this waste that has to go into landfill as they cant recycle it.  i can remember black jacks and fruit salads at 4 for a new penny. Coca cola zero tastes the same as I can remember it from the late sixties.

My Dad claims to be the last person in Britain to buy cigs for a penny. He was evacuated to the Lake District at outbreak of WW2 and there was a machine on the platform at Bowness - empty. He put a penny in and pressed the buttons anyway and one gave him a packet.

Who knows. He also says Mars bars were the size of a battle cruiser and as a kid he used to find bottles and get the money back to pay for them.. I remember fish and chips at 9d (3d for chips and 6d for he fish). And in those days cod was white...........

Local Newsagent used to sell them to the school kids in the 1971, one at a time, can't remember how much though, can't have been much more than a penny or two or perhaps 1 new penny.... :D
