Ballz.

Long story short, technical difficulties, potholes and punctures all conspired against me today.  I didn't make the cut off for the second lap so I only managed the first loop of 58 miles

I may have to have another go at it in a few weeks

The roads around here do leave alot to be desired

Always fancied a road bike but roads and near miss on pots hols I witnessed put me off, although my Specialized Hardrock 2012 is not designed for full road use, it did job on my 65 mile run to Brighton.

Don't think I could have done 115 though! Shame you had issues as it was great weather for it.

Yeah I hit a pothole at 40mph, blew out the rear.  The replacement inner tube was faulty which meant I had to use my last spare.  The damage I quite impressive especially when you consider that the pressure in the tyres is in excess of 110 psi

thankfully arse was well above saddle at this moment, going downhill I always leave space between the plums and the saddle

Of course, right up until the punctures which kind of sapped my energy...I had to nurse the bike back after that as I had no more spare inner tubes.  I was till 12 miles from the nearest help point and it's a long walk wearing just socks....

Plus I was almost killed by a motorist on the very last roundabout, I was turning right using the correct lane, indicating with my arm, wearing a fluorescent yellow top and going a sensible speed, he was joining the roundabout at high speed, wasn't looking, saw me at the last moment and locked up under breaking just missing me.  But hey that's still my fault

But my legs aren't hurting at all today which means they weren't given enough abuse

I'll post some pictures of the tubes later, needless to say that nothing would have stopped these punctures.

Plus the problem with sealant is that it adds weight to the rim on the wheel which means they 'spin up' slower.  A key factor in hill climbing where you need the wheel to be as light as possible so that the power produced by cranking is most efficiently transferred to the road.

Do you use kevlar tyres and latex inner tubes to try and minimise punctures. I found this made a massive difference, although it is probably not going to help with a pot hole. Although having said that I have hit a few at speed and got away with it

Yes, it is quite a head turner with the loud bang when running 110psi.
