Cost of adding power to garage
« on: 07 September 2013, 10:22:29 »

So the garage at my potential new place (if all goes well), is a pre-fabricated thing. Not great, but very long term plans are to demolish & re-build.

I'm not certain if it has power, so it needs to be fitted if not, as its a must for me. As I want lights and power sockets in there, does anyone know ball park figure for this? Researching online gives some wide ranging figures, from couple of hundred to £1,000's

Garage is quite close to the house, talking sub 5 meters here or so. House has an an extension so I'm assuming power can be taken from there, outside, dug deep and into the garage?

Looking at say 2 or 3 plugs, and a pair of strip lights.

I'd need to double check regs now, but fairly certain outbuildings need to be on their own trip. Which would mean a 30A connection back to the fusebox. Armoured cable, obviously, then normal garage wiring.

Hummm fuse box is under the stairs I think, driveway is concrete, does the cable have to be underground?

Mine has 2.5mm armoured cable fed off its own 20 amp MCB in the house - with a separate mini-panel with main ELCB in the garage itself which has individual breakers for lighting & sockets

I don't think so - it could be suspended - but would need physical protection as I dont think you can rely on the cable itself for that. Our incoming supply is via an overhead cable and the suspension wire is quite substantial (i've just looked)

Makes sensor to have it house box, thats way it is at my parents. I'm hoping it's already got power, just want to budget for it in case its not.

Only problem I can foresee is securing the cable, it can pop out the side of the house and run down to the garage. Just if it needs to be dug underground or secured to edge and sealed in  :-\

Cheers, over-head would work ok, there is a small gap (width of a gate) between house and garage which is the only bit it would suspended, rest, it can be attached to the house.

I don't see why it should cost that much. Running the cable is the big variable in the equation, and I don't see why you couldn't do that bit yourself if it's awkward.

If you're not going to run anything big in there I'd say a 16A rated feed would do, especially if it's only going to be relatively temporary. That would save you on the cable cost.

Correct route would be building regs or Part P electrician for an outside circuit, of course. Again.. if it's going to be short-lived you might consider whether it's worth going down that route or using a more "temporary" solution.

If there is an existing circuit, I'd be taking a close look at it, as they are often bodged. ;)

Cheers Kevin.

So talking 3 figures here? As 4 appears a bit high  :o

Hear what you are saying, it's going to be temporary as long as budget is. I can think of a few errr tunnie type bodges  ::)

Main thing I want is lights to be honest, those I guess could be wired to err something, then just waterproof type extension which I use for jetwash, from the house to the garage when needed?

Rather have a better solution, but depends how much we are talking.  :-\

Exact same here :y

Cable passes from outer wall of house to detached garage in standard plastic waste piping.
This is around 2ft below ground level, and is encased in concrete below the patio ;)

+1 If you intend on demolishing then a good quality extention lead as it is close to house that way it is a temporary so no regs involved  :-\ :y

+0.8
with a caveat...
Get two extensions - one for lights, and another for sockets.
Then when you blow the fuse on the sockets trying to use your welder at 200amps, you don't switch your lights off.
