Frontline. Every 6 months for our cat.
Says on the packet to repeat every two months for fleas, one month for ticks and lice  :-\

We check her regularly with a flee comb as she is black. No problems .

Little angel she is. :)

But I shall double check with the boss. :y

Wifey was sitting petting the dog, as you do, and noticed some very small black 'bits' in her coat. She said they'd been there a while. I, of course, gave her the obligatory "yeah, yeah".
Anyway, she googled it and it turns out it's flea poo. To prove it she put some on a paper towel and wet it. It turned red so it was dried blood.
Doggie is not scratching and I can't see any fleas.
Went to asda and got some front line and was telling the girl behind the counter. "Oh yeah" she says, " everyone knows that". Well I bleeding didn't  :-[

Nor did I :o I use frontline on the two labs every 4 months :y

Yes, I agree. While we were on holiday last year she got a tic on her neck (and if you think fleas are horrible....). This year I treated her 48 hours before we left and she had no problems.

Mollie still ended up with a tick on her in France despite our best efforts of treating her before we went. Think is she must've brought it back with with her to Blighty .... didn't notice it till after we got back!  ???
Horrible little bastards. We got a little plastic crow bar shaped thing from the pet shop and twisted it off.
[/highlight]

It's not recommended to physically remove tics as this can lead to their mouth parts being left behind, which can lead to infection.
Your far better off resorting to chemical warfare. Use a cotton bud and dab the little tinker with surgical spirit or similar whisky works as well . My hound Monty picked up a tick a few weeks ago it was as big as a marrow fat pea before I spotted it :o. Seeing that I did not have any surgical spirit to hand and I had polished off all the whisky  I had in stock I  tried meths on it. worked a treat, it let go in a few seconds allowing me to let it meet it's maker by flushing it down the bog :y .

Finding these blighters very hard to shift. I noticed a couple of them running round her belly yesterday morning, so.......battle stations.
Wifey scrubbed her to within an inch of her life yesterday and I re-treated her with front line. After looking on the internet, I went to pets at home and got enough flea spray to do the whole house. It said that after spraying you must not go back into the room for 30 mins, so I did the living room carpet just as we went to bed.
Woke up this morning to find .........loads of dead ladybirds! ;D
Don't know where they'd been hiding but it found them.

Nuvan staykill is what we used years ago when our cat spread his flea infestation indoors. It worked well, but Christ its strong stuff.
You can feel your lungs slowly getting tighter as you spray it, almost to the point hwere you cant breathe.
I wouldn't be surprised if they don't sell such stuff to the public anymore.

You can get prescription only Frontline from the vets....its a lot stronger than 'over the counter' Frontline.
Also you want to spray everything, not just the carpets....sofas/chairs.....and pull the cushions out of them and spray underneath  :y

We use Advocate spot on treatment once a month and no issues at all :y

As said, they protect against pretty much every thing that the dog might be expected to encounter :y

Advocate here too, seems to work well - you do need to treat the house when you start also or they will keep hatching out of carpets etc

This stuff, Johnsons 4fleas, smells exactly the same as Raid fly spray. That kills just about anything as well. It probably is the same stuff.

Oh and i forgot to mention.....vacuum the carpets first with a upright vacuum if you have one.....not only might you suck a few of the blighters up.....but they get excited about the vibration and come to the surface of the carpet  :y

A few years ago , house got inflicted with cat fleas Council (at the time was free!) were going to take 4 days to come round - got 3 smoke bombs. Lit in house - left for 24 hrs, some still wriggling, then sprayed 2 days later which finished off . problem with smoke bombs - it gets everywhere - so was wash every cup etc. before use. - effective on fleas - probably also on us!

When I were a lad, everyone had fleas in their house. Dogs had half their tail bitten off and cats had one ear. We forget very easily.
