Getting rid of cigarette smoke smell
« on: 07 June 2008, 19:52:48 »

Project no fear has come along very nicely and it's now at the stage whereas I feel I can "depend" on it, so the project is a sucess and I'll be keeping it for some months at least to get the value from it.

I need to do some very minor final things, but the one thing I'm noticing at the moment is that one of the previous owners was a smoker, and there is a very strong smell of this in the car.

Now in a couple of weeks, I am going to pull ALL of the seats out of it, basically totally stip the interior.

While it's at this stage I want to clean up the carpet and roof lining and all little nooks and crannies as best as I can to get rid of the smell.

Any ideas what to use or the best methods? I've thought about using the steam cleaner on it? Any good solvents you know of?

No need to worry about cleaning the seats or door cards though - as a nice leather set is going back in there (Thanks Psychnurse :D ) !

i hear a lemon, sliced in 2, and left in the car over night does the trick! Put one on the rear luggage rack.

another on the arm rest or something at the front.

Constant breaking wind will mask it, and say to Maria you have to fart to overcome the fag smell ;D

You'll struggle to get rid of it - my back bedroom still stinks from when Mrs TheBoy's brother lived with us for a while when he seperated.  He would never smoke in the house - he's too concious for that, but just pile of clothes etc before they got washed...

Hopefully removing the seats and door cards will go some way towards getting rid of it! ;D

Steam clean will help. Think a slightly thinner road tar perfused through the fabrics. (Nice!)

I do think those Neutradol things help too, they seem to absorb it.

And plenty of fresh air too.

Stean clean along one edge but aim away from the main carpet and then if you decide to steamclean it, strap it between 2 strips of 2x1  along the clean edge and hang it up,  Give it a good clean and then rinse with the hose pipe.  leave it to hang to dry with one corner lower than the other it will be more or less dry in 2/3 hours on a good day.

That was the only efficient way to clean a customers car where they had spilt a bottle of milk in it.

Some real horror stories.

The Metro Turbo we once cleaned is a good story, but sadly cannot be told on the forum.
