Note Kate that those who are advising avoiding the A303 are all Home Counties/Rat Race types who want to get there as soon as possible and for them the destination is more important than the journey!  :P  ::)  ;D

The A303 is one of my favourite drives, the bit through Wiltshire has some stunning scenery and yes there are a few pinch points which can be a nightmare (usually on a summer Saturday!) but usually its fine.  I've done it many times and to be honest I wouldn't even bother going up to Taunton to get on the M5, just keep on going until the A303 turns into the A30 and you'll find yourself at the M5 at Exeter. Enjoy!  8)

I see the country bumpkins are getting involved. Chewing on straw and drinking cider makes the brain operate slowly. You want to get there quick and no stops. Avoid 303 if you are travelling at the same time as the masses wanting to chop 40 miles off the journey but sit in queues. Make sure you have decent sat nav / traffic reports

Kate my advice being a man of the West Country with family in Essex would be m4/m5 every time as 303 is rubbish for service stations IMHO and also too many roundabouts but good for a quick drift if you feel like it ;D ;D

If you don't like the A303 or caravans don't go through the new forest, FFS! ;D

Thanks for all the advice.  :y Hilarious. ;D ;D ;D

I've got 2 dogs and 3 cats so maybe the quickest route would be best. The cats are the worst as if they get out of the carrier you end up driving along with a cat on your head. ;D

It looks like I'll be leaving on Sunday morning so which would be the quickest?

You are moving to a new house, need to bee there at a dececnt time,as you might need some food etc.
ensure car loaded ready to go. Get up at 05.00 breakfast, walk dogs, make a cuppa in  cup every bodies loads by 6.30, then go M3,A303 A30. You have a long day a head off you and will need to stop for dog breaks and a like you should get there by lunch time.
going m4 m5 is going up to come back down.

There are services and, indeed, junctions, on m4/m5 for dog walks etc

Going up to come back down, means avoiding the god awful 303.

Am currently sat in a class room with 29 other hgv 1 drivers, (driver CPC training) the consensus of opinion is A303. :)
