I have to say I could not be a full time train driver, WAY to boring for me sadly.

I'm in the wrong career...

Though having spent 19 years in IT I'd also dearly love a career change, if only something else paid as well..

Male stripper? Escort? ;D

Interestingly......a bit of two things.

As a CEng MIET type person I do Program Management for a very large engineering company delivering ship electrical and control systems.

So at the moment that is for three off drill ships for Petrobras with the scope including Safety system, vertical induction motors for the propulsion, Alternators for power, 11kv switchboards, transformer sets, variable frequency drives for propulsion and drilling, nav equipment, dynamic positioning system equipment, LV switchboards and MCC's...etc etc .

All design, manufacture, commission etc

Sounds interesting - and varied. With maybe less management bollards than exists in IT (although probably not)..

Definately not......Petrobras are a very 'interesting' customer to work with......and our internal 'processes' are also excellent fun!

Then throw in the travel to south america (arse end of southern Brasil) and China plus an engineering team who 'lack direction' and it makes for a great time lol.

;D Well, at least it's not just here in the IT world, then!

Although I find these days that I wake up dreading the idea of going to work.. not being a fan of conflict and now being stuck in a situation where everything appears to be a conflict, even when it's other internal departments who are meant to be there to help, certainly doesn't help!

Sometimes I wish I'd stayed in the flat with the small mortgage so I could downsize my career and go and do something infinitely less stressful.

The plus side for me is seeing the finished products, two recent ones:

HYSY278 - Semi Sub Heavy Lift Ship

A little PSV (Platform Support Vessel) for Detroit

And now the drillships (none built yet...)

I can only dream of seeing something as tangible as that as the fruits of my labours  ;D Impressive stuff, though  :y

I have a love of engineering like that, but sadly never did go to University and, if I had done, probably would have ended up studying IT anyway - at the time I loved IT, but working in the industry has sucked that out of me ;D Either way I don't think I'll ever see "CEng" after my name ;)

Such is life, as they say :)

Career changes are hard (as the OP is finding, I imagine) - finding one, finding one that will finance your lifestyle, and finding one that you're qualified for!

Is train driving really that dull? I drive a bus for a living, so I get three main strands of interest. One, setting new lap records (this is a joke, I do not condone driving like a lunatic in a ten ton bus for kicks). Two, seeing what the great and the good public of Teesside have in store for me, mainly in regard to not seeing a brightly coloured tin shed heading toward them at 30mph, and stepping in front of it. Three, living up to the reputation and catting up anything in a skirt. Or, given where I work, usually anything with their own teeth...

I could fancy train driving if the money is that good...
