Hi guys,

Massive thanks to Symes yesterday for helping me cut out a bunch of rot from my boot and body (under the bumper). I'll post up a few piccies later but all thats left now is:

> couple of 5p-sized rust bubbles ( i mentioned them before and will be doing these myself with sand paper and filler)

> chassis rails and sill surface rust. Am i ok to put underseal over the sills and chassis rails? i.e. will the mot man think ''hmmm, wondering what he's trying to cover up there?) Also, if i cant get ALL the rust off with the cup brush/drill combo but most of it is it still ok to jam the underseal on? or will it need cutting out/welding? (the picf i put on before, most folk said it just looks like surface rust)

> arches. going to cut these bad boys out and weld in new with the help of symes (thanks mate)

> finally, theres a patch i didnt even notice  :-[ right above the passenger sill cover..... its quite bad i think. will have a butchers at some point

You would be better using a cup brush on an angle-grinder than a drill. You get more power, and it's much more securely attached so you can work it harder. If you're going to be doing metalwork, you will need one for all sorts of stuff. The £15 ones are OK for light use, although stepping up to a decent brand around the £50 level gets a much more usable and and stronger tool.

As for the underseal, remove as much surface rust as you can, brush on your favourite metal paint and then apply an even coat of underseal.

You must have a damaged flat screwdriver somewhere? That's pretty similar to official MOT rust testing tool; use it to poke and scrape the suspect areas to evaluate how bad they are.

Thanks Nick,

Yeah have got a cup brush as suggested a couple of times on here :) but yeah only a drill tho :(

So with the screw driver im looking for the cracking sound? if i dont hear that and it seems sturdy i can get off as much crud as poss (even if theres a bit left) and evenly underseal?

:)

Webby I strongly recommend this method

metal>
sand 60-80 grid
epoxy  (wait 3 days minimum)
sand 150
filler (3-4 days minimum)
sand 240- 320
epoxy (3 days)
sand 500-600

2 layers of metallic paint (original color)(for surface check) let dry

sand 1000-1200
final paint+clear coat (layers as much you wish-but be careful number of layers more than 4-5 will change the color tone)

and calculate every layer 5-6 micron for 0.8 gun
and calculate every layer 7-8 micron for 1.3 gun (although it depends on your style)

so toast the filler in between :y

and about arches : you can paint some portion for blending but must clearcoat whole panel

if you dont you are in trouble :-\

ps: as for filler apply as tiny layers , not a thick one at a time.. or it will fracture

Cem, is this for the rust spots or chassis rails/sills?

I'm assuming the rust spots. going to be honest mate i'm not a body expert (im actually not an expert at anything lol) so ive got some filler, some course sand paper (cant remember what grit) and some fine sand paper to finish it off.

ive then got a can of primer, a can of star silver and a can of laquer! lol

as they're only small spots and mainly hidden i'm not too fussed (obviously ill try and make it look good)

it doesnt matter .. you have to toast filler between epoxy layers , either on body panels or chasis rail..  because filler itself is effected by many things including water , moisture whatever.. I'm not sure an ordinary primary will be good for water and filler insulation :-\

ps: even epoxy has a time limit for resistance
