Replacing CDR2005 with CCR2006 - stuck
« on: 09 September 2015, 08:24:08 »

I am attempting to replace a CDR2005 head unit in a 2002 CD with a CCR2006 from a 2000 CDX. I have switched the cages, the plugs look the same, but it won't go in. It goes in most of the way, I think the plug and socket are not engaging. Any suggestions?

How far is it going in before it jamms?

Usually the rear part of the metal cage that can cause tightness, in which case bend it outwards slightly before pushing the stereo home

If its about an inch out, and a 2nd hand cage, its top of cage near back that's bent down slightly. Bend back up

Thanks for advice gentlemen. Your replies suggest that the 2006 should fit, and work OK, good news. It does not jam as it goes back, but seems to hit something suddenly, presumably the socket. I suppose I could take it apart again and check that the head unit plug fits the car socket; it looks like it should.

Removed the cage again and plugged the cables direct into the head unit. Punched in the code and everything works, tape, radio and CDs!
Don't know why head unit would not go into the cage; there seems to be no room for self alignment of the socket to the HU plug; possibly the cable was in the way; little more work to be done.

Took the cage out again, and found I could insert the HU into the cage all the way, wiggling the blue socket in the back of the cage; and everything works. I could then push the cage plus HU into the dash and it still works. But HU is not flush with surround. I have taken it apart again and fixed the cage into the dash, now I cannot insert the HU into the cage. I have wiggled, but in vain. Is there a trick?

As it's about the only thing you haven't tried, how about...

Fitting the cage to the HU then fitting the whole lot to the dash :-\

That's what I did last week, works OK, but without the screw at the back to pull in the cage it doesn't line up with the surround. That will have to do. It's just frustrating.

Surely the screw is to secure it, not position it, unless the wiring behind is misrouted, causing it to push the cage back out slightly  :-\

Could glue the plug to the cage (with the radio fitted) ensuring that the plug is precisely where it needs to be, then remove the radio, fit the cage then refit the radio, hopefully exactly where it belongs :y

Thanks, Al. I had considered gluing the plug in place, but did more tests. I discovered pushing HU into cage, cage not installed, it snags long before plug and socket meet. I can 'charge' past that snag, then plug and socket marry sweetly. I then reinstalled cage, rammed in HU, it snagged again, and plug and socket did not completely connect; I could set the code and work the controls, but no sound came out. I then tried another HU, similar fault. I think my trouble is I have bent the cage, and when installed it is tight on the HU. Anyhow, I have a working result at the moment, main problem is engine does not run well, see parallel thread.

Does the cage have two metal flaps, one either side?  If so, bend them back up into the sides of the cage and try again...

It occurred to me that I had a similar problem when I swapped the CDR2005 for a CCRT2008 in the Oxymoron and this was the solution :y
