Gentlemen, thank you all for your help. Car is V reg, full prefacelift style, window switches on centre console, prefacelift climate control panel. After a couple of hours poring over Haynes wiring diagrams, concluding the electric window safety cut out switch was the likely culprit and wondering where it was and how to replace it, I had a thought.

Yesterday I removed the central console to refit the gear lever lower gaiter. Had I disturbed the window switch wiring? Took it off again, found one connector not pushed home. Pushed it home - everything worked! I would have twigged earlier, but initially windows did work. Perhaps a gear change disturbed things.

Took car for test drive, new clutch etc., all seems fine.
