What have I done?
« on: 17 June 2016, 18:09:31 »

I've just ordered 2 things off egay.

What are the chances of one of them causing so much grief I'll have to contact egay.  So far in the last year, I've had nearly a 100% failure rate with the 'tards selling shite (and I've long given up selling stuff on there, due to the idiots you have to deal with...   ...something I reminded Mrs TB of earlier when she blew her stack over some frekless 'tard who'd bought something off her, and felt that she shouldn't have to pay for it).

Fingers crossed, but I would be disappointed if it all goes Pete Tong.

Ive been buying off ebay for about 10 years probably and until this year never a problem.
The problem, partly my fault, I never looked at the feedback of the seller. was the item never turned up. I waited the compulsory time and then reported to ebay. Ebay refunded me within minutes!! and the seller I guess was banned as he/she disappeared from ebay!

I found it good for the first 5 or so years (joined in 2001), when it more like early carboot sales. Genuine people selling unwanted items, making a bit of pocket money.  Then, like bootys, the traders and individuals looking to buy and they sell at profit became prevalent, and it all turned to shite.

So much is Hong Kong tat, even if you specify UK location, and all of a sudden they don't speak English when something goes wrong, or insist you post it back to Hong Kong at your expense.  Even UK sellers are just selling tat or unreliable stuff. Its not particularly cheap (due to traders), and its always hassle I don't have time for.

Trouble is, I've always been a sucker for mail order...  ...the excitement of deliberating and choosing something, and the anticipation and excitement of waiting for it to arrive...

...then the hassle starts, trapsing off to the sorting office (with no parking) to pick it up, finding it doesn't work properly, off to shops to buy packaging, off to the postoffice (with no parking) to post it back.

As a relative newbie to eBay myself, I'm encouraged by your positive experiences.  ;D

I can relate to the Post Office bit as our Post Office parcel collection is rarely open at the times displayed on the door.  >:(
I have a parcel trapped in the Post Office as I type, I might pop down and break in to see if I can retrieve it.  ::)

There is no chance whatsoever that you will be able to wake up, get up, and get to the door before the Parcel Farce "delivery driver" has stuffed the I'm to oppsing lazy to actually deliver your parcel, please collect it tomorrow before we lose it card through the letter box and roared off in his van.

I'm long gone at that time and the Post Office is shut when I get home. I'm usually lucky that the parcel is delivered really quick, only for it to be held against its will in the Post Office for several days.  ::) ;D

May I put the case for the opposition, gents? My eBay experiences over the years have been almost always good, and in the rare times when that was not so, eBay stepped in and remedied the situation.
I've bought quite a few things from Hong Kong, whth the only drawback being the delivery times.
My most recent purchase was a Universal Multi Card Reader, cost £1.95 INCLUDING postage! It didn't work, so I messaged the vendor, "digiextras_uk", advising them of this. I got an immediate reply, saying that they have sold thousands of these items with virtually no problems, and they promised immediate despatch of a free replacement and did not ask for the faulty unit back.
For that cost price, I wasn't such service from them and they went straight to my Favourite Sellers box!

Cars are a different kettle of fish. All you can lose is your time.....and a train ticket, I suppose. If it isn't as described, you simply walk away. Which is why I'm surprised sellers aren't more truthful.

I stayed in a caravan in Chester, when I was 12. I'm over it now.

You can always set your delivery address as your works one, if you are based in one place normally. It does help with deliverys which turn up while you are working

My point exactly. A Hong Kong seller trying to make out UK.  The only reason they don't want the old one back is return postage is too expensive.

Its cheap 25p tat being sold for £2.

I too have had the "this is the first problem we've had, and have sold thousands"...   ...twice from the same seller, 2 months apart.

Just had an email from one of the sellers, guess what, he's not posted what the auction was for, but something functionally similar.

FFS. oppsing mongrels, all of them.  I specifically wanted the genuine item. That's why I paid a fair bit more. If I'd wanted a cheap copy, I would have paid 99p.

I get what you are saying, TB, and I do look carefully at what is being offered. Although his email address includes "uk", as you point out, the posting made it clear that the item was of Hong Kong origin - and the replacement works well!
