It's a very long time since I've changed a rwd clutch (1900 CIH Manta) but you're young & fit enough to do it yourself ... not especially difficult, just the weight of the gearbox balanced on your chest & knee  ;D I've only ever lined the clutch plates up by rack o' th'eye ..... just might take a bit of jiggling. Get the car on two sets of ramps and you're away  :y :y You can decide whether you want to change the DMF when you see it .... I can understand why the garage would want to change it all in one go
Car on two sets of ramps sounds unsafe.

Why?
If you're really paranoid you can use them facing in opposite directions.

With a big enough heave from the side the whole lot could topple over. Four axle stands are similarly dodgy.

Try real technology that works. The funny thing on your desk with a curly cord.

Look up sosautomtive in Huntingdon, and press the big buttons in the right order ;)

If I hadn't moved we could have done this over my pit no problem.. but er.. yeah  :-[

Not had an Omega box off before but it has to be lighter than the 300ZX auto box, and I took one of those out on axle stands & ramps (and my chest ;D)

Still, Huntingdon is a nice enough place ;)

Eh? What's one of those, don't have any of them on our desks here. I do have a cordless version though, that nice man Mr Cook built for me  ::)

But point taken  :y

Tunnie, it's an easy enough job and if you speak nicely to that Mr Wood fella he might even be willing to advise... I'm willing to bet he's had a RWD gearbox out a few times fairly recently :-X ::) :y

Car on two sets of ramps sounds unsafe.

Why? I'd say two sets of ramps were safer than axle stands

I've had various cars on either 2 sets of ramps or ramps & axle stands over the years, & though I've never tried to push it over  ::) they've always been solid as a rock. I won't be trying any time soon with my R Class though  ;) ;)

Considering the wiggling and shoving to get the box out,yet alone trying to re-aline the box when putting back in I personaly would be concerned that if the car did shift in one direction or another while on 4 ramps or axle stands it could well be..ta ta to tunnie...so sorry but why take chances..do it properly/safely/...better safe than sorry as me mum use to say  :y :y

I'm never hugely keen on getting under a car with ramps/stands, it's in my head I know. As this is big work, needs to be on a decent lift.

Hopefully can sort a deal with Serek  :)

Bah, done four on the drive ::)

Trick is to reverse onto decent ramps then get the front of the car as high as feasible on stands  :y  If the stands are tripod, be sure that the feet are pointing opposite rather than the same way, should minimise the risk of rocking/collapse... ;)

Terry, if you can heave 1700kg of Omega off 4 ramps/stands you must be stronger than you look. Or, your stands and ramps need an upgrade.

I've just removed the gearbox from my 2L manual before I scrapped it. Two axle stands under the front and leave the jack under just incase. Took less than two hours to do. Very easy, lots more space than the opel mantas I'm used to. It only took so long as the prop bolts did not want to undo at all!
