HID right side not working
« on: 01 December 2016, 20:58:48 »

:-[ The right hand side HID headlight is not working. The inside of the glass has misted up with water, this happened around two weeks ago. The light was working up-to 2 days ago. Just before it stopped working it was giving off a light blue colour. I've checked the fuse and it's ok. I suspect the dampness inside the light has caused problems with the bulb. Has anyone had similar problems and if so how were they overcome?

I reckon you need a new HID 'bulb' but as they both age together, you're better off replacing them in pairs. Vauxhall are expensive, but I'm sure you'll get them via eBay .... 4500k(ish)

Do they age and fail? I have had none fail until last weekend, when I found my son had one that did not always ignite, after 16 years and 140,000 miles service. On e-bay genuine Philips bulbs cost110 pounds, aftermarket 85 pounds. On a car that cost me 190 pounds I am reluctant to spend 220 pounds replacing 2 bulbs.

Yes, they get dimmer and dimmer, start to flicker and ultimately fail.
New bulbs are a big improvement in light.

Thank you. So, again, a little like domestic fluorescent lights.

Yup, they degrade gradually, so worth replacing after a few years anyway, even if they still strike

I see what you mean. I could pay £200 per bulb, or, bottom of this page, get 2 for £4.73. At that price, if any good, I would change mine tomorrow.

Don't bother with the cheap lamps terry. You will be changing again in a year as they will be awkward to strike. Gollums referance is the ones to buy
When I first bought my estate the lamps were usless. The o/s one wouls strike, warm up then dim itself to almost orange. Lamps worn out. Bought some reputedly good replacements but had problems after a year with them not wanti g to strike every time. Replaced with known brand and had no more probs

Thanks Keith; good advice. Difficulty is deciding what to buy, with prices from £5 for 2 bulbs to £200 for one. There is a tempting £60 80 plus £5.40 carriage, or Amazon's £70.68 free carriage, both for 2 bulb packs, picture looks right. Doc G does not give a reference, very wisely, just suggests looking at around £45.

I can pretty much guarantee that 100% of the sub £30 one on ebay are fake, cheap Chinese shit.  I can also guarantee that 90%+ of the more expensive ones are as well.

Same goes for Amazon marketplace, or Amazon "sold by <xyz> fulfilled by Amazon"

Buy from a reputable supplier. And NOT ECP either.
