Technology again!
« on: 18 May 2017, 18:07:53 »

Spent most of the day on it  ::)

Bought a new Android 6 phone ....with 16Gb of Ram ... fed up with my other Android 4 phone with 2 Gb of Ram...kept running out of space and a 16Gb SD card in it is next to useless as Android 4 insists of installing new apps to the phone memory   :(

Popped my sim from old phone in it....took a bit of sorting out but fine....but soon discovered it wouldn't connect using mobile data, but would on wifi  :(

Even tho it was saying I had 4G connectivity every app said no internet  :( I'm on giffgaff and had set the APN up correctly according to giffgaff web site but no luck  :(

Just now I discovered a setting under 'data usage' and a tab labelled 'O2-UK'. In the tab there was a setting 'Mobile Data' and it was off...swiped it to turn it on.....and lo and behold its changed the APN setting to use an O2 one and its now working on mobile data  :y

Happy days....but doesn't technology make you waste ages of time sometimes trying to make it work for you  ::)

Recently bid and won an auction on Ebay, paid immediately as I always do, but no despatch email or goods. A week later, I was about to contact the seller when I got an Ebay message asking if I wanted the goods where he hadn't received payment. :o

It transpired where his old email address was retired when he switched ISP and he had updated Ebay and Paypal email addresses to the new one. He could no longer access Paypal payments in progress that used the old email address. I cancelled the Paypal payment and got him to send me an Ebay invoice. Paid again and still the same problem. :-\

Unfortunately, where he had started the auction on the old email address there was no way he could collect the Paypal payment as he could not change it being linked to the old email address. I suggested he contacted Ebay which he did and they told him to issue a Paypal invoice directly, which resolved the issue. His comment was Ebay seem to be aware of the issue and knew the solution, but it does nothing for Ebay's less than stellar reputation when it comes to their system and its administration. :(

Like you say, things like this are timewasters as it has taken over a week of going back and forth to get it resolved. ???

I suspect the answer would have been to keep the old email address active while switching to the new, but as a computer programmer, I can also see some potential problems with this as well.

Yep, where he has multiple auctions and buy-now going on all of the time, the answer would have been to shut shop for a week or two or longer. :o

There was also the issue that this was not documented so you know when changing email addresses would cause this problem. All system have bugs, problems and limitations, the key as a developer is to document them along with known workarounds. :y

Bought a new Android 6 phone ....

Be careful when it wants to update Android, as my recent mobile purchase is now an expensive paperweight when it crashed during an update.  >:(

I had a brand new iPad (SWMBOs xmas present) crash. During initial confit it wanted to upgrade to the newest iOS, never recovered. Lots of telephone help from Apple - who finally replaced it! It was a very strange crash in that everything seemed to work except the "desktop" icons were sort of greyed out! If it wasn't under warranty I would have been stuffed ......

I'm sure there is a way to force it to reload android with it plugged in to a pc ..... ive done it with a iPhone  :y

But yet again it will probably involve many hours of wasting time just to get technology to work!

Mrs LD's iPhone just refused to charge on Sunday night. Managed to get to apple on Monday who couldn't get anything from it (battery now flat) but tracking the online repair a replacement is on its way  :y

Still involved 2 hours of sitting around at the shop (no appointment) plus the 3 hour round trip to get there though! Although work took me almost there for a job and it was their fuel ::)

This is the problem. I call it working for computers. We have sleep walked into it. It is the norm that the user is expected to configure and sort out problems. The wastedmanhours loss of productivity or social time is immense.

Imagine having to reconfigure your car at the roadside when screen icons are greyed out for some unknown reason.

Fair point, but there's a balance to be struck.

Early on in my working life I was a field engineer for IT/datacoms. Customers would call the office with "problems", insisting on an engineer to attend. On 99% of occasions the engineer who attended had to prove our kit was ok & help fix the users issue - I suppose the key difference was that our kit was sold/leased with maintenance support - which meant we were paid to attend even though it was seldom our kit that was faulty - hey ho.

Yes you'd think so, but I gave it to a Mobile Phone repairer who said he tried 4 or 5 different ways to reload Android and couldn't get it going.  :-\
