My silver estate Omega would loose fuel line pressure after a day's rest. I eventually traced the fault to jubilee clips having been used in an earlier fuel pump change. I replaced one of them with a spring clip I had lying around, and used a new Jubilee clip for the other. Now the fault has reappeared. Halfords do not stock them. Are they Vauxhall only items?

No, the poxy things are all over modern cars. But unlike a Jubilee clip which covers a range of sizes and can be adjusted once in place, the spring clip is only good for one. And only then if it hasn't been distorted by previous removal/refitting attempts. I don't trust them, and always replace them on my cars.

Why did the jubilee clip cause trouble, Terry? I've always preferred them over those "poxy" spring clips, which are only used by manufacturers because they save assembly time compared with jubilee.

I feel similarly about hose clips, but for years I could not understand why this Omega alone started reliuctantly. I found that there was no fuel pressure in the line after a day, wondered why, and found the hose clips at the pump were jubilee, not spring. I replaced one with a spring clip, the other with a new jubilee. It worked well for a year, now fault has returned. My theory is that as the hose compressed the jubilee clip slackened, whereas the spring clip maintained pressure.

Years ago I was advised on this forum not to use jubilee clips on heater bypass valves, lest I crack the plastic pipes.

If you must use a screw type clip on a hose get one that applies even pressure all around or it could let you down.

They can be awkward, but they do a better job.

I can see the reasoning - problems due to heat cycling, etc. - but they gave me terminal aggro when changing my expansion tank for one that I could actually see the contents of.
Removing and re-positioning them caused me to use a different language!

But you are incorrect.


The idea is to be able to correctly secure hoses, always with a constant, even pressure, no matter if they are hot/cold/whatever.

With the correct tools they are easy, fast and foolproof.  Even without the right tools, they are still easy, fast and foolproof.

This is exactly the point. Spring loaded hose clips do the job perfectly, but to remove and replace easily you need the proper tool, not a handy pair of mole grips or long nosed pliers.
