I used to drive a 2.5TD and killed it (water intake - undeserved ending to the car.  I miss is  :'()  I test drove a 2.2 petrol estate and hated it.  There's so little happens when you put your foot down.  The TD, when it was running, wasn't that impressive either - but at least it kept pulling as the speeds got higher - the 2.2 seemed to struggle to 60 and was then gutless after that.  Only my experience.
I was completely disenchanted with the 2.2 and went on the hunt for a 2.5V6, and that's what I've got now.  It pulls much better, and the mpg isn't too horrific (I'm getting about 32mpg to and from work at the moment but hoping I'll be able to improve that - got a slight misfire atm).

Given the choice I'd go back and get another 2.5TD - just missed one when I was looking but time ran out and I needed a new motor.  V6 sounds lovely though :)

2.0 seems a little too small an engine to have in such a big car as an Omega, in your position I would go for a 2.5 or 3.0.

I certainly wouldn't downsize from my 2.5  ;)

I have had 2L and 2.5V6 estates, both manual.
Undoubtedly the V6 is a more refined drive and probably has more umph at speed.   But from a standstill I always thought the 4 pot was more than respectable.

Economy - typically I got 500- 550 miles from a tank on the 4 pot vs 400-450 on the V6 (and 350-400 on 3L auto  :().   To me that is a significant difference.  Just resetting the trip meter when at speed on the motorway is , of course, not representative of normal driving.

Maintenance - the 4 pot is significantly simpler and will have lower bills, especially if you are paying for maintenance (vs diy).

HTH!
(I would avoid 2L auto though.  I haven't had one but suspect that will be slow and thirsty)

Had a W reg V6 gls estate for 3 years loved the get up and go, but hated the fuel consumtion on it going up to london everyday.  Never had any probs with till some berk in a truck turned right and ripped door ,wing and headlight of it . Pxed for me 2.2 oilburner and 3 months later got laid off and £200/week worse off, 2.2 's ok but wont tear trees up with performance but at 70 on cruise does 35 -40 mpg on readout so its not so bad , just wish they'd made bigger deisel lump like a 3.0 or some thing like it , but hey cant have everything in life . had it 5 years now and still enjoy driving it , just look at what paid for it and ..... S**t that was a lot off cash for a car and what do I get for px against a newwr car..... NADA!! so i think she's gonna have to go a bit longer
