For some time now our internet has been getting slower and slower. Ebay pages taking an age to load, sometimes timing out. The speed test still saying we had a reasonable line, but still taking for ever. I put it down to increased load on the line, several people in the street getting BT home hub thingy and was looking into changing ISP, but my son borrowed a new Netgear DG843G from work (something to do with reliability tests   ) and plugged it in in place of our existing Zoom modem. Wow, everything is back up to full speed, we tried pushing it and had a TV channel plus 3 Iplayer films running plus surfing all at the same time. I am surprised, I always thought that if something worked, then that was it, its either broke or working, I didn't imagine it could run slow.

Ah yes, I've only ever heard bad things about the BT home hub thing, personally I'd never use the standard equipment that an ISP supplies, but maybe thats just me.

Also I'm prolly not the typical user, implementing MAC address filtering/lockdowns and what not!

Due to the way DSL works....with its adaptive line rates etc then yes, in theory they could age.....or simply a case of the Netgear front end being better and your line is degrading...

I have been using a US robotics sportster  dial up external modem, I bought in Sept 96, for the last four years. Maybe I am stuck in a time warp or something!

Mac address filtering is to easy to get round....  

It is indeed, BUT combined with being locked down/tied to specific ports, makes it slightly secure. And its only my home network so nothing too important.

Or equally likely with netgear, the think spewing out shite non stop. Netgear got in a bit of trouble for the antisocial behaviour of their routers a while ago.

Another possibility is that the hackers have marked your IP as 'interesting', and the old devices firewall used all cpu cycles rejecting.

But most likely, the old router was just crap.
