Depending on the model, and some more knowledgeable OOFers may correct me, there may be a cold start mechanical advance on the pump. all.

On a 406, it'll be ECU controlled (assisted) i'm sure..

Sounds like you've done the obvious James... If it still has cold start issues then I'd be looking for another leak... It's about the only thing those Pug lumps are prone to! The gearboxes normally fail long before the engine

Give it a really good Italian tune and it'll do it the world of good!
I do know that those diseasels do have a habit of being a bit smokey at startup

If that means take it for a good thrashing then I suggest that would be a good idea.

I assumed it was petrol, matches and an insurance claim

Pretty sure it's all mechanical, on the TD -no engine ECU.

It's not ECU controlled like a petrol engine, more "assisted", like the Mig 2.5TD..but there's no fuel temp sensor which plays up..
