No difference as the adaptor wil have a DC-DC converter.....and the inverter has a DC-AC converter.

i have an invertor in the car, cost about £25 from argos.
I have a 24v invertor in my lorry, cost me £55.
basically it is like a phone charger, but with a 3 point plug at the end so you can plug your laptop in.
 ;) ;)
