Jaime and I were saying the other day.. it takes a scare to make someone a better driver...

I'd consider myself very safe...but largely because I've had some close calls and learned from it.

Aye, as I said to James, everyone needs a significant accident (without being hurt obviously) to appreciate how vulnerable you are in a tin can at even lowish speeds.

There is a serious risk of loosing my licence with this Senator! My licence is now clean, and won't be for very long at this rate.

Drove the Senator to Uni, 70 odd miles of motorway miles. My god its a nice cruiser, better than the Omega. Here is the best bit:

Up the M40 cutting (Vicar of Dibley shot) its a steep section, car cruising up no problems. Foot stayed where it was, some Seat Cupra was being a bit racy up my arse......

So foot went further down (NO WARE NEAR THE FLOOR) woooosh the Senator took off.... 75right up to 115 (in kph obviously as the dash was set to that  )

It NEVER went over 4k RPM!!!   - My foot was no ware near the floor 115, and it STILL has soo much power available. Back on the flat stuff, it just sits at 110 all day long.

300 quid car, no wheel wobble, comfy has hell engine ticking over at 3.5k at 110!!!  

Averaged 29.7mpg on the run back too!!  

Some people have smoking addictions, some people have drink addictions, i have an addiction to the Senators gas pedal!  

Now I think you realise why I make comments on the 2.2

Take it easy - a hugely powerful car, without the electronics to keep you in check (no TC?), and quite small brakes...

Jaime - The brakes have been getting better strangely, i think a film might have developed on the pads since its been stood for so long, it brakes a LOT better now than when i first picked it up. Done sod all to the brakes too.

No wonder you think the 2.2 is underpowered, it is really... after I have done a few things, air-filter, fuel filter, plugs. I rekon it would be time to challenge your V6

Right hand button... for 5 seconds. Be useful when we get over the water...

Having been a passenger in a nasty accident, and by the grace of God survived, It's important to appreciate how quickly things can happen at such speeds and how little reaction times you really have.

No car or amount of safety toys will save you from an 80mph crash. And get caught doing anything over 100 on the motorways, expect a ban, which could break up your career.

Big, fast cars are fun, but on a serious note look after yourself mate

I know thats what scares me, blow-out or something else at speed.

Get a tyre blow out at 100mph on a busy motorway... I don't fancy the chances and it would probably be night night.

I had a front blow at 80mph - just drove across to hard shoulder.

When they blow - if they blow rather than deflate, they stay sort of up until you slow down.

That would be interesting.....the deceptive thing with the Senator lump is its lack of power under 4000rpm makes it feel faster because you get a sudden surge....the multiram on the V6 smoothes this out....

As a pointer.....the Senator we had for Chezkwrecks didn't pass the 100mph test near my house (12 mph short) which the Estate did.....

Lets think about this a wee bit....

The Police used the Mk1 Senny first, because, generally, it was the fastest economy luxobatrge available at the time.  BMW were just knocking at the door at that time.

Formula Shell (who remembers that??) put a death wish on the Vauxhalls for Police use argument and Ford really got their foot in the door.

This transmogrified to the 2.8 then 2.9 Granada, mostly on reasons of cost, as well as the Escort 3.

There were, however, a number of forces who used the Senny in 24v form as it was a good interceptor with loads of load space for the cones and stuff that were needed.

Again, this developed into a number of forces using them as patrol cars.

Personally, it was my favoured steed of choice.

Then BMW really broke into the market, as did Volvo, and here we are today.

A fair number of really big comfy cars awaiting rediscovery by the next generation of drivers!!

PS - Limits (both speed and handling) are there for a reason and I no way encourage the breaking of such limits other than for legal purposes and after sufficient advanced training.......    

Spooky, when i worked for the auctions used to visit just about all police car centres to collect the decommisioned senators, and every police driver i spoke to prefered trhe Senny to the Omega!!!! in fact bedfordshire and lincolnshire police forces along with Essex actualy stockpiled the last remaining 500 senators that were built by vauxhall until they needed them!!! The police actually persuaded vxhall to build the last 500 while the Omega was being built!!! thats why you often see Mplate sennys in white!!

if your talking about the senator brakes they are exactly the smae as the 3lit Omega mate!! where do you think the Omega brakes came from??

Sennys are 286mm aren't they - the same as early 2.0l.  v6 had 296mm

I'll have to get the rims off the Senator and fit those pads for the Omega i have in the garage then!
