Thanks for the replies the one I was looking at is a Toshiba L300 11V Seems to be around £310 . What about refurbished ones are they best avoided  :question  :y
Now, with refurb, you have to ask why.  Are they returns that have intermittent faults that can't be found? Business ones on a next day exchange that have been sent back due to faults? How good is the professional refurber?  Has previous owner 'copied' the licence leading to probs later?

Thats assuming profesional refurb. Back street shops and kids bedrooms, might end up with a right heap, and frequently illegal copies of Windows.

Might be worth avoiding refurbs to be honest.

To LD, don't underestimate the crapness of netbooks.  I think the concept (of mega low perfromance) is flawed, even for web surfing.

That was why I was looking for one with a decent size RAM... Hmm, not sure now as there are some pretty good, lightweight laptops about now. I know my Old Man has got a Dell one which he rates highly (and he uses it heavily for business) and it wasn't much more than some of the netbooks I've been looking at :-/ :-/
It does depend on usage, just bear in mind how relatively sluggish they are if performing anything intensive...

Most intensive thing it's likely to do is OOF TBH ::) ::) And it can't be any slower than surfing on my E71
OOF not that CPU intensive, though a fair number of elements on the page, so page render may cause high cpu

I suspect the old SMell I use for tech2 will last better on its batteries (as long as recently charged) - good for ages.

Sadly, batteries getting old, and don't seem to hold charge for more than a few days :(.  And the mobo is knackered, memory errors, just like my other SMell :(

Unfortunately it looks like the charging circuit has packed up on my current laptop... The battery is less than a year old and it runs fine on power but will not charge. But TBH it was a freebie from my mum and can only have 1G max RAM so is a little slow... It's not even got built in WiFi ::) ::)

But it does have a serial port :y :y
