Rodents......(Help please)
« on: 20 October 2010, 17:02:38 »

Went to fire the Omega up.......Engine caught then cut out.....and the spanner symbol starts flashing at me.

Opened the bonnet to find rat shit all over the engine...... and the little f***ers have chewed through these rubber pipes....along with all the sound insulation.

Any idea what it is and how much it will cost to replace?

Thanks.....Here's a picture of the damage. >:( >:( >:(

That's part of the engine breather pipework .. I'd have expected it to still fire, though, but to run rough as hell - which makes me wonder if they've chewed through anything else while they were at it :(

Any codes stored that hint to sensor problems?

apparently rats are a big problem at the moment, my mums rd has a severe problem, so has an estate in hayes which i'm told is real bad. still got them at my mums, ate through the plastic waste and came in the kitchen under the sink.

Flashing engine symbol is an Immobiliser fault, have you opened the key recently or any sign of chewing to the wiring?

time to bait some traps (or sit with an air rifle to keep an eye out  ;D ), they probably climbed into the engine to keep warm.

They are known to have habit of taking up residence up behind the dash, and having the wiring for breakfast dinner and tea. ::)

Yes but, if it flashes its an immobiliser issue

Well the result will be an air leak and hence the rough running

Easy to replace IMO, but no offence, those breather pipes haven't been off for a while have they?

So, with that and your questioning,  guessing car diy is not high on your list of hobbies. So will be a bit more fiddly than you would like, there is not much room at the back of the engine. The metal clip levers off with a screw driver, and both ends of the pipe are a push fit if iirc, although if that pipe goes to the breather box on the crank case then there may be a clip on that end also. Access will be fiddly. May as well follow the breather cleaning guide while your at it???

Also, I'm sure a wanted ad on here will source a pipe for little wedge.
