Decorating advice.....??
« on: 28 December 2010, 11:32:08 »

I`m no expert with house decorating matters and have to decorate a room in another house.
The walls have been painted "Barbie Pink" :o......I think it`s emulsion painted on plaster (without lining paper); I`d probably like to go with a good quality brilliant white or magnolia replacement....how the heck can I cover such a vivid colour without using several coats and gallons of paint?

Is there such a thing as an emulsion undercoat?....if so which colour to use in Barbie`s boudoir? :-?

Go to somewhere like B&Q and get a big tub of the cheapest white emulsion they do and apply 2 or 3 coats. Then cover with a good quality one coat emulsion. We had to do this in middle daughters bedroom, her walls were a similar colour to your pic. Her room is now a subtle mushroom colour and much less painful to look at :y

no easy way around it, you could try Dulux's "One Coat" - But thats often just as expensive as two coats of standard brilliant white.

When I did my living room in my flat the colour change was not big, but still took 3 coats  :(

I disagree Welung. Names like Johnson's paint is far preferable to B & Q's own and covers far better with each coat thereby saving you the extra effort of painting the room half a dozen times.  ;)

The difference between the 2 though, is getting 15 litres of B&Q value for the price of 5 litres of Johnson's. We did 3 coats of the B&Q then a top coat with Dulux ' One Coat'  and it covered completely.

But .... would the Johnson's have covered the wall 3 times better than B & Q's 3 times cheaper emulsion?  ;D ;D

Thanks guys...... ;)

Perhaps it`s a daft question, but should I use a cream/magnolia as an undercoat for the brilliant-white; for it`s higher opacity (perhaps?). :-?

I don`t mind going Dulux or Johnsons, as long as it`s not going to take dozens of coats. ;)

not sure  :-/ I think I'd use white, then you're only buying the one colour/tub of emulsion

IMO you're going to need less coats with the named brands.  :y

I recently used a Home Base own lable white cheap and   exellent coverage, you probably won't need a named brand as a top coat I think 2 or 3 coats will do the trick :y

Done similar in the past.  I used a spare can of magnolia or mushroom or something to take the sting out the vivid colour (it was just gash paint that was in the garage) then finished with a proprietry topcoat.   Worked out fine in a couple of coats...
