not used optical media in years, too unreliable. Hard Discs and RAID if you want to backup (or time machine if you a Apple fan  )

For displaying it on the TV, file server broadcast from the PC/Mac. Or Windows Media Centre if your a windows fan

As i know you have a new Sony tv, im sure it can be networked. Install PS3 server on your pc, and as long as the pc is powerful enough to convert and stream the files,  quality is pretty good on the tv 

I've been using Magestic for OSX, its brilliant, yes its simple, but it does exactly what i want it to do. You point it to a folder(s), on Xbox, go Videos > Magestic, and those folders are listed. (as long as both Magestic & Xbox are on the same network)

It also plugs into itunes, so all the music is there too, photos can be done too.

Unless I am giving someone an app, program or video, i'll use dropbox, if its a large amount of data, think thats only time i would use Optical media.

Sounds like a lot of faffing around. Media Center is so much easier, and both the Xbox and the MCE share an identical interface - just press the green button on either, and you have immediate access to all videos, music, recorded tv and tuners on your media center

Once its set, its easy. Just boot xbox, two swipes to right, and your there, its also much quicker browsing as it does not fart around with previews / thumbails. Its no more difficult than loading Media Centre (which took for ever!) That said I did not give it the spec it deserved.

Mine only takes 20s or so if it needs to drag the MCE out of standby

Try running one over wireless, then open media browser
20 mins would be closer to the mark.

MCE Extender is faster on cable, but will always have more overhead than an insecure setup. I am in the habit of turning the xbox on via green button on remote, then selecting the VGA input on the telly. By the time I've sorted the right source, its generally ready

All sounds complicated to me.....i just press 'home' on the tv remote....then select ps3 server....then its just like windows....selecting the folder/file to run 
I must admit it then takes about 10secs to start viewing the movie......but then my celery pc goes into overdrive (100% cpu) trying to convert and stream.
PS3 server does spec a dual core proc for best performance

I like a disc as it is off the PC - if I kept all of my completed videos on the computer it would overfill the 2TB I have.

I have a burner, the editing package, a player (games console) and I am editing HD MPEG2 and want to avoid transcoding beyond transition effects.
