the thought occurs neither of those would be any better for your back, both involve stretching, crouching, lifting, awkward access etc.

sounds like you'd be better moving away from manual stuff, but you know your body best as to what it will or wont do.

You will still have to crawl around in lofts under floors and trying to get in and out of them

I have allways thought that someone who is good with his hands can turn to any job using his hands. How about a Technician in a school/college/university, pay won't be anywhere near as good but easier work. I nearly applied for a job the other week repairing small plant equipment from a hire company.
I think your biggest problem will be the diifference in wages.

Good Luck

Richie I know how you feel as I hurt my leg in a car accident just under 2 years ago in a non fault car accident.. Since accident been looking for something different as I am a service engineer repairing intruder alarms and CCTV systems... I tried to go back to install and believe me I can do service work with pain but there is no way I could even think about going back to install as after a day of crawling around a loft I couldn't walk.. :y

Took me two years to retrain 15 years ago.Got to be 'Part P' registered if you go self employed, got to belong to approved 'self certification' scheme ie NICEIC/ELECSA etc.Costs me about £1grand per year in subscriptions, you get inspected every year and your work and files checked,  and then add contract insurance and about another grand in test equiptment which you have to have.
You got to be fit and agile, like i was 15 years ago before i started this, now my knees are fck'd.
Spend most of your working life on your knees crawling around on the floor or in lofts.
Money can be really good and then you might get nothing for a while.I've been lucky getting some long term contacts and commercial stuff but if you start from scratch could be a struggle now.
Most of the electricians i have known ended up with dodgy knees and had to give it up in their 50's or find an easy job changing light bulbs on the 'maintenance'.
Good crack if your working 'on site' with a few nates but 'house bashing' on your own is a bore.
Good luck with it anyway.
