hi
been looking around for a remote start system to fit to the miggy before the winter kicks in just so that she can warm up before i get in
dont want anything fancy, ive seen a few but they have alarms included in the sytem but im happy with the miggys own keyfob as it does the doors and boot release
anyone recomend anything, maybe a single fob unit that will do the remote start on its own

You should also be aware of the insurance implications (even though the keys may not be in the ignition at the time of detection/incident) and of the Construction and Use Regulations regarding this. 

The above assumes the vehicle is on a public road or road to which the public have access where the C&U regs. apply however, if the vehicle was taken or damaged as a result of unattended running while parked on private land - a driveway perhaps - an insurance company may use this fact to contest  the claim.

You MUST NOT leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running or leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road. Generally, if the vehicle is stationary and is likely to remain so for more than a couple of minutes, you should apply the parking brake and switch off the engine to reduce emissions and noise pollution. However it is permissible to leave the engine running if the vehicle is stationary in traffic or for diagnosing faults.

Dear Zulu, would very much like to know where the construction and use act now stands. I am led to believe that E marked items over ride the C & U act. If not cars like the golfs and audi's with there undersized indicator lenses would not be allowed on British roads.

Concerning defined legislation I can't tell you at the moment Manta as I don't have the time to look through the many amendments to the regulations, however I would imagine that manufacturers would have researched both this and other points carefully to prevent any vehicle/part concerned falling foul of any vehicle regulations within the EU.


You do make an interesting point however Manta concerning EU type approval markings.  It's been obvious for some time now that regulations and legislation spawned by the EU is slowly but surely replacing, updating or amending the long standing arrangements found in the sovereign nations of the EU membership.

This appears to be a relentless march towards the harmonisation of various laws and regulations including the implementation and enforcement of such matters throughout the member states of the EU.

Just out of interest, my small print from my insurance company specifically PROHIBITS remote engine starting on any security alarm or immobilizing equipment due to the implications for theft prevention being useless if the engine is already started, and will not pay out should the car be taken in that state. Like they say, only the window prevents a theft, and with the engine already running.......................basically, it invalidates your insurance according to them.

Would one of them kenlowe heater things not be a better option. Engine is nice and warm so interior should heat up in no time coupled with the lovely heated seats in the front and bobs your dads brother.

The steering lock would still be on and I would fit something else so the car (auto) could not override the park lock when you press the brake pedal

In 1976 I moved to Shetland just in time for the coldest winter onm record. I owned a Yamaha FS1-E and drove it 17 miles from South Nesting to Lerwick everyday for work, stopping at least 3 or 4 times to defrost my gloves on the engine (with my hands stil inside) until I felt circulation again.

Don't the police Etc use a system where they can leave the engine running because of all the light etc but as soon as you try to put the car in gear the engine is killed and can only be started again with the ign key.

I seem to remember this being brought in as some cars were stolen while at crash sites

Next time i speak to the local Police workshop i'll ask them about it
