well after owning loads of bikes in my youth/mainly dirt) i got myself a licnce last year would anyone out there have any suggestions on a sensible bike to buy i never got my licensce before as i never trusted myself but now at the age of 40 i think i can read alot more situations as before so any suggestions, i was pretty hung up on a honda hornet for a while but then i had a 600 as a school bike  (yamaha x600 i think) and it wasn't really as quick as i thought a 600 would be

(thinking of Yamaha YZF R1)
I test rode both an R1 and an R6 for a friend just before he passed his test, and I would highly recommend the R6 over the R1.

Yes the R1 is faster in a straight line, but unless your roads are long & straight then the R6 will take the R1 any day thanks to it's shorter wheelbase and reduced weight over the R1.
The R6 is no sloth either, I was taken by surprise at how quickly I found myself the wrong side of 120mph, and I've been riding 37 years.

I would completely disagree with that.Having riden both - the R6 is similar to riding an old 2 stroke, you need to be constantly revving the tits off it and going up and down through the box to make good progress, great little track bike, but can be hard work on the road. The R1 is only about 10kg heavier, which isnt noticeable at all, particularily with all the extra torque and bhp, lower down the rev range - open it up in almost any gear and hang on tight. The wheelbase on the bigger bike is approx 13mm longer (probably to help keep the front wheel on the ground) which may be noticeable on the track, wouldnt make much odds on the road, apart from making it a bit less flighty over the bumps.
An R1 imo will leave an R6 in its wake in most situations, and be a much more fun in the process.
Having said all that - Cem, if your not very experienced and you buy an R1, you may well go out in style. They are savagely fast, and the grunt from the engine will be addictive. There is a good chance you will either lose your license or hurt yourself, or worse. ;)

thanks Albs..  :y

I know my limits .. and how deadly it is..and I'm not 20.. only having midlife crisis now ;D

seriously want to buy it for soo long.. and wont prefer to damage 1. neither me 2. nor the "machine" :y

The thing about bikes, especially Jap sports bikes, is that you are always going to want to go fast, acceleration (or adrenaline) is addictive and you can guarantee that every time you get on the damned thing you will end up breaking the speed limit, the faster you are going the less time you will  have to react to other road users.
My Mate used to have this Kawakaki ZX6R...

It's a much better bike for a novice than a 1,000cc machine.

Back to the original subject.

The only time an Omega will ever be quicker than a Subaru is on a motorway airfield at over 140...
The white estate in the picture below is a standard U.K. spec vehicle and I know it would leave any of the Omega's I've driven for dead!

Any of the Impreza range (blower type) will piss all over a standard Omega!  No question about it.

It's not until you get to 100MPH+ where the Omega may make some ground, and due to gearing will potentially have a greater top speed.

First corner, the Impreza will be a small dot in the distance, and not in the Rear View Mirror either.

Sorry, but anyone who thinks their Omega will outrun a STi Impreza is badly, badly deluded.

An omega will beat a scooby in just about every other respect, apart from 'what looks the most chavviest' though!

I have only ever been in one Imprezza turbo. It was an import with a very low geared diff for some reason (top speed was only around 115mph), the acceleration was very quick indeed, and way beyond any omega I have been in.
The Imprezza is also very easy to extract a lot more BHP from via chipping etc.
Totally different type of car from an Omega of course. ;)

Vamps was refering to the race from a standing start that did happen at a York Meet on an airfield.
The Mx5 did win no doubt about it but if the race had been much further the omegas would have caught up. . .  Lucky the race was not any longer then  :D ;D
