I had a cam belt kit that failed on a V6 veccy about the same time as mark fitted that to jims car. I take it that theirs were also gen vx kits, as was mine.
It lasted  just under 12,000 miles. >:( It was fitted by a pal who works for vx as a spanner and the correct kit was used to set the belt and tension.

With this in mind, do they have a sell-by date?

Yes - the packaging should have come with a Fit-By date on it.

Trying to work out your maths there... 40000-39970 = 30 miles :-?

Yours managed to get to the end of the road at least, so surely 29 miles more than you got? ::) ::)
