That's easy then FH 16 750. Only trouble is it runs on optis favourite fuel.

cheaper on fuel than an Omega 
or he's brought a pushback tractor tug to tow with and a V8 to bolt in

Checked the ATF level on the V70 as when the car is cold it dosn't change gear very well.  The level was just above the bottom mark and the fluid was nice and dark. 

Now mulling whether to top it up or change it.    I know what you lot will say!

If it's anything like the Saab, it's not a straight forward job, O and then there's the correct fluid to use.

Fairly straightforward.  There's a drain plug and a fill plug on top, or I could fill through the dipstick tube. 

Although am I right in thinking that elderly auto boxes can object to having their ATF changed?

Are you sure the plug on top is a fill plug? I seem to recall that there is a plug that should not be disturbed as it's for something else entirely?Top up via dipstick tube run the car for 1,000mls then do a "sump dump" and repeat two or three times to gradually refresh all the fluid rather than trying to do it all in one go.I do believe[although obviously you need to check with better sources]that you'd need JWS 3309 fluid or its equivalent.

Not really...      It looks like a fill plug, but in the youtube vid I watched, they filled it via the dipstick tube. So that's the way to go. 

As too the fluid, the handbook says "Only Volvo's gearbox oil part no 1161540-8.  Do not mix with any other oil"   
  Too be honest, I assumed that DexIII would do.....   

Off to google for some research. I'll report back.

You could get Volvo to do it. Technically it's a service add on at xyz mileage. One of the reasons Volvo servicing seems relatively expensive is that their schedules include things like the gearbox fluid where as most other makes don't

Baza is right, the correct ATF fluid is JWS3309, so I think I'll get a bottle of that or equivalent and top the fluid up for starters.

ECP do a universal ATF that apparently is compatible with Volvo 1161540.

Same stuff as the posh Vectra,  you have to drain and fill 4 times to flush the old out.
