Ive often wondered just how necessary it is tbh. I cant see it doing much cooling when its sat in boiling hot coolant anyway.
If it was needed to keep oil temps down why not have it located where it would be blasted by cool air all the time ?

You'd have to do some serious alterations to the plumbing and, at least, install a larger oil rad. Maybe better to just fit a new cooler?

It stabilises oil temperature, helps warm oil from cold, and keeps the oil from vastly changing temp during differing engine loads...

No you wouldnt. Just blank off the connections at each end of the sandwich plate and block. I was questioning the need for any oil cooler. Not suggesting a different one.

So started cleaning and checking bits, only 4 bent intake valves but 2 damaged guides. Trouble is looks like a bent rod on cyl5 , well I think its 5 as its rear most on the bank with the head marked L. Strange as the valves on that cyl are fine. Bores are good and valve stem seals still soft, now has anyone got a spare conrod?? X30XE.

Well, I'm no mechanic, but I'm guessing that wouldn't work 
But, of course, you have an old omega to try it on

In the 70,s only competition cars and supercars had oil coolers.People who wanted to do a lot of caraven towing or similar, would have one fitted as a precaution.
I suspect an Omega being used for everyday normal driving would survive quite happily without one.

When I was breaking Omegas 10 years ago it was difficult to give the engines away, so in your shoes I would be thinking of scrapping your engine and sourcing another one.
I realise that they arent so easy to find now, but cant be that rare. Should be able to find one for a couple of hundred quid I would imagine.

If you need valves, I am pretty sure I have some serviceable 3.0 ones (as the exhaust ones are sodium filled) that you are welcome to. Probably got followers, collets, springs the works to.

Would be very surprised if there was a bent rod, not seen one yet do that

The valve guides are usually ok but a good wiggel with an old valve would show any cracks

Forged crank and all the bits to make it an Omega lump bolt on and you already have.

As above.
Think more heat exchanger than oil cooler .... oil initially warms the coolant to help get engine to temp sooner
