2.5TD - Coolant problem
« on: 20 September 2006, 08:15:44 »

Started up this morning and heard a strange bang from under the bonnet...  Sounded like something loose being flailed about, but then it went strangely quiet (well, quiet as diesel go).  Everything sounded normal again.
I jumped out and stared underneath the car for any ejected bits, and lifted the bonnet to see if anything obvious was wrong.  Couldn't see anything...  late for work so jumped in and drove.

Coolant has drained out the engine over the journey to work (40 miles) and when I get there and pop the bonnet again there' coolant over most things on the drivers side of the engine bay. :(

Before I ring a garage - could anyone point out something obvious that's likely to have died?

It's a '98 2.5TD Elite (the Beamer engine)

Thanks!!

Water pump failure. Very common fault on the 2.5TD and is because they use a plastic impeller. Don't run the engine until you change it. Bits of impeller may be forced around the engine and could block water ways causing much worse problems.

How difficult is that to diy if I were to order a water pump?

Busy trying to get the beast home - Garage say £90+vat fitted, which says to me that if the pump costs 30, then 60 quid labour can't mean it takes that long  :-?

Got home tonight courtesy of the 4th Emergency Service. :-[

Anyway - turns out, after he raked around in the engine bay for a bit, that the Air-Con compressor had collapsed.  On it's way out it bumped into the fan, which didn't take the news so well.  In fact bits flew off, and yup - straight through the radiator.  That'd explain the leak  :)

Now I've got to get a new compressor and radiator.  Can anyone recommend where to go?  And roughly how much?

I've changed radiators on a previous car (which was reasonably straight forward).  What's it like on a 2.5TD Beamer?  The A/C compressor going to be specialist no doubt - with specialist prices...

Cheers
