If you don't do it this weekend, I'm available Tuesday and Wednesday if that's any help.

Monday at a push.

I hope its just one side, as I should have the parts to do one side in the garage....

I'm doing r.welfare's from the forum here tomorrow, + breathers + aux belt tensioner..

This'll be my fourth time in three weeks!

Chris - does Richard know what time of day you usually work on cars ;)

I will be popping in to see M_DTM tomorrow morning, I will let him confirm my suspicions that the cover needs to come off, and its not something as simple as the filler seal....

I just did the passenger side myself today post exercise.  I used some paracord to create the necessary room to get the cover back in without dislodging the new gasket. Taking the tray off the loom defo works.

He tells me 10.30 tomorrow - I've spent all day changing cambelt, brake pads and servicing a Mazda 323 so might not have the energy for an 'all nighter'!

Have you braved your cambelt change yet Ian?

Yep - cambelt done on Saturday.  Can breathe easier now.

The old one was very polished with some slight cracking on the outside, and some crap was coming out of the upper roller bearings - don't know if this is expected, but glad to have got it changed.

Found it next to impossible to allign the crank marks on the new belt with the sprocket,  and it was a bit of a bastard getting it on the cam sprockets - 2 and 4 seemed to be half a tooth out from 1 and 3.

Next job is the thermostat as temp needle scarcely moves off the bottom at the moment.

Cheers,

Ian

No all nighters, finished up about 7:30 after plugging everything in the right way around, that paperclip test is darn useful!

When you doing your thermostat mate?  I've got a new one already to go, bit scared tho - removing the big pipe that goes to the block, and which o-rings I need is the worry..

So which of these bits do you reckon I should get?  I've got the stat + an o-ring it came with, + 1 more o-ring..

Excellent, cheers for all that - I'll be attempting it next week at some point I reckon, or perhaps on the bank holiday..

Mark et al,

The book of lies makes this job sound straightforward, but I'm sure I have read elsewhere that its a 'mare.

Having had a quick look access to the transfer pipe looks tight at best.

Can you advise on likely issues, pitfalls etc?

and why do you recommend buying a new transfer pipe - do they deteriorate/get damaged?
and do you buy the thermostat in its housing or is the inside replacable?

Chris - how much was your 'stat?  (might take you up on your offer to lend your TC - and put faces to names)

Cheers,

Ian

I've got a feeling they didn't give me any money off on the stat, or at least not much at all if they did.

Was about 34 quid I believe...  When you thinking of doing it Ian, perhaps we could do em at the same time, same place?
