Think it's about time I said hello!
« on: 08 April 2007, 14:56:09 »

8-)Hi All, I've dropped in now and again over the last few months and I think it's a terrific site with both friendly and knowledgable people. I just never seemed to have anything to add!

I have learned a lot from the various threads but can't master the tyre situation.

I have visited Tony Bones probably half a dozen times or more (he used my car as a reference over several visits to rewrite his omega data for suspension setup), but still can't get more than about a year or 12000 miles out of my tyres (even on the back), albeit fairly evenly worn, so I guess it's time to try another brand. I am currently using Avon ZZ3 235/45/17. They grip very well, even in the wet but I guess they are gripping too well.

Does anybody use a similar performance tyre that lasts a little longer? I will need a 2nd mortgage if I have to keep replacing 4 tyres a year (not to mention the stress and general discontent at home as they are not cheap and seem to be magnets for screws, nails etc!).

Sorry if this is old ground for you but I don't think I have any other problems with setup/alignment etc now that Tony has done his thing, so it really is down to personal experience and this has got to be the best place to find that. The car is 2.6 elite auto saloon (early 2002) and I pay about £100 all up per wheel (Hemel Hempstead)

I.ve just picked up another screw and to be honest, both the rears are getting towards the end so now would be a good time to make the change. Soooooo.............I'd appreciate some feedback here guys.

regards to all

Hey There

I've Found this a nice and firendly place so think you'll fit  int well.

Re tyres found this on Blackcircles -

The Avon ZZ3 is another performance tyre from Avon. Since the development of their directional pattern they have achieved an excellent reputation amongst the discerning performance driver. The Avon ZZ3 is the older brother of the Avon ZV3, the smaller and slower speed rated tyre. The ride quality is good and the Avon ZZ3 sticks to the road like glue although this tyre can sometimes be a little hard in wet and icy road conditions – we like the life offered by the Avon aswell, compared to most of its competitors it lasts a little longer, although the The natural competitor to the Avon is the Toyo Proxes T1-R and the Falken ZE512 which is comparable on performance and costs quite a bit less.

Hello & welcome  :)
I guess like most things it comes down to personal preference, I've tried most makes, Avon are OK, Michelin & Continental make too much noise for my liking, tried several other cheap makes, so I go for Pirelli P6000, not the best grip but good enough & fairly quiet.....

Welcome :)

I got around 16k out of Dunlop 9000s. Rears were shot ::), fronts would have been OK for another 2 or 3k had something not gone wrong with geometry.

Soft tyres like Avon, Dunlops etc, esp wide, low profile are always going to suffer high wear.

Another tyre thread.... oh joy!  ;)

I can only really comment on the tyres i have used on an Omega.

Avon ZV3. Bl**dy awful! Noisy and not particularly grippy. Thankfully didn't have to suffer them very long as I got rear ended and car was written off!

Dunlop SP Sport 9000. Very good. Quiet and impressive all round grip.

Continental Premi-Contact. Excellent. Quiet and good grip in both dry and wet conditions.

Continental Sport-Contact. Also excellent. Superb levels of grip in the dry, very good in the wet.

Goodyear Eagle F1. Without doubt the best I have ever used. Cannot fault them at all and would be my recommendation to anyone.
Not cheap, but worth every single penny!

Hello less and welcome.

I got 30k from the original Michelins that came with the car, and currently have 20k on the Contis that replaced them - the Contis look like they have another 5k in them.

I guess it is no coincidence that the senior citizens here (AA and very soon myself) seem to have the longer lasting tyres... this suggest that it is not a matter of brand  ;D
