Help Needed
« on: 21 May 2007, 18:11:35 »

Well Ive just had my 1998 2.0 auto returned by the mechanic after having the head done and its still oppsed. He has done the head, replaced the t/belt and pulleys, plugs/leads, oil/filter and fitted two new tyres but has brought it back with the engine management light on.

He says that she has no power when trying to drive it and is idling eratically. I havent started her up myself yet however he did mention there were three faults and I havent a clue what.

His recomendations are I get an electrician to fix it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any one got any ideas...

By the way I havent paid him yet  >:(

... start with the paperclip test (accessible here) - post the results ... sounds like it could be a duff DIS pack and/or HT lead(s) though ...

i should think NOT, what kind of mechanic is that.....car idles erratically and he is arseing about with tyres and avoiding the real issue.

Idle control valve needs a right good clean ( carb cleaner) check all breathers and Ignition leads and paperclip test to see what the fault codes are.

When you have the codes report back here  :y theres a how to on paperclip test somewhere on here  ;)

More likely to be 're-fitter' error  ::)

Don't pay him until he has sorted the car out for you and until it is running perfect!!!!

Well I have got the car keys back and started her up myself. She starts fine as if nothing is wrong, however sport mode wont engage, winter mode wont disengage and when you give her a few revs she stutters like hell then settles back down.

THe fault codes that are showing are:

Cam Shaft Sensor
Throttle Sensor
Kick Down Sensor
Idle Sensor

She is also showing autobox on the computer screen??

Any ideas appreciated.

they certainly all seem related, but often one error messgae in a sensor will pass on its problems to another - so only one issue here, solve it and your car is fine.

Possibly cam sensor as listed but im not convinced....yet...as i thought that would be more like an intermittant start than a bad running car  :(

For starters I would give the throttle body/idle valve and the breather hoses in the vicinity a good clean, incl the small hose and port under the throttle body - all of this can affect idle and throttle response on the 2L,and check all hoses/connections are refitted properly.   Easy diy job.

I concur with the comment about fitting tyres etc when the car isn't running properly, what cr@p.

Hi there
When my Cam and Crank sensors went, it would miss when revved and if it’s in limp mode I don’t think you can engage the sports or winter mode, I also had the autobox warning light lit on the tid display. If cleaning the ICV and breathers don’t work try changing the cam sensor, as it is a stored code and see if that improves things.

Good luck :y

Update........No new news. Just finnished work so Im going to go check out the hoses however I need to order the throttle body gaskets from the dealer prior to stripping it down as my local car spares informs me its a dealer only part!

Brother in law is forwarding the number for an auto electrician he knows this evening so hopefully I can get him out pretty soon.

Where abouts are the crank sensor and cam sensor, anyone got pics as it does not show you in the haynes manual (Typical) and any idea if its a dealer only part or if its available else where??
