The tensioner mark was bang on the line when the cams were lined up. There does not appear to be any slack in the belt when rotating.

With regards the noise changing with clutch in (It is manual) or climate off, I am not prepared to try this as the noise I was hearing when I drove it home was very scary.

Update.
The garage who fitted the HG's are obviously denying it could be anything they have done. From my description they are suggesting piston or big end failure and recommend a replacement engine. If this is the case, I don't have the time or spare cash to sort this.
This is a fine example of an MV6 and I will not be happy to scrap it or break for parts.

If anybody who lives near Leicester would like to come and have a listen to confirm failure then I can sort out what my next step is.

Thanks
