Right another update.
Code read the car today and it is storing fault code P0320 misfire detected on cylinder 2  :-?
Any further suggestions appreciated
I single cylinder misfire is most likely to be HT related (plug or coil pack).  Worth checking the coil pack plug is clean.  Engine issues may also cause this, but unlikely (I'm sure you would have mentioned cambelt failures etc!)

Thanks, just rechecked the code and it is P0302 Cylinder 2 misfire detected.
I have removed the rubber sleeves on all of the diss pack caps and they are clean.
I suppose it could be a duff plug but why won,t it fire up on 3 cylinders, it won't fire at all.

I wonder if the crank sensor cable was disturbed when you had it apart and it's now failed. Do you get any lights coming on / going off / flashing on the instrument panel when you crank it?

Edited to say OOPS! Just noticed it's a 2.2. Strike that!

I guess the cylinder 2 code was stored when it was last running, so that points to the cylinder that's misbehaving.

Might be worth putting a compression tester on that cylinder just to eliminate a serious engine problem. Most likely ignition, though, as mentioned.

There's a slim chance the injector on that cylinder might have blocked but they rarely cause trouble.

It's had 40 miles of being hosed down with petrol and no firing!  ;D

Right another update...........I have now changed the rocker cover gasket and o rings, cleaned the throttle body and breather pipes, fitted new plugs.........
Still doesn't fire at all............removed diss pack and tested each HT connector with one of the brand new plugs, all seem to be sparking fine.
I have checked all fuses both inside and out, all are fine....
HELP please the missus has been without a car for a week already and looks like at least another week to follow  :-[

OK So you've got a decent spark when cranking on all plugs?

Does the fuel pump run when you turn the ignition on?

If you push the plunger in the schraeder valve on the injector rail (have a few rags around it) do you get a spurt of fuel?

Any signs of fuel on the plugs when you've been trying to start it?

Fuel pump appears to be running ok, the plunger you are referring to.....is this beneath a screw on cap, if so yes I did get a spurt of fuel when pushing in the needle valve.
Yes the plugs have fuel on them after cranking.
Something to add.....when cranking the engine doesn't appear to be turning over as normal and is not attempting to fire at all.

Is the battery OK?

Maybe worth giving it a charge for a few hours. It may be that it's able to crank the car but not fire the plugs under compression (although, IME, if it'll crank the engine it'll fire). If there's fuel and spark it should run.

May also be worth cranking it over for a few seconds with the accelerator floored. This disables fuel, and if the engine has flooded, it will clear that. Try to start normally after doing this.

Thanks Kevin, it could possibley be flooded and I did not want to depress the throttle pedal in case I made it worse but that is interesting if you say flooring the throttle clears the excess fuel  :y
I will put it on charge and try cranking it with the pedal to the floor.
Thanks
