In a straight line the sport button doesn't really make a huge difference over kickdown, although mine doesn't seem to really redline it unless the sport mode is on.

It does transform the gearbox on twisty roads when "pressing on", though, because it's not (as) constantly up and down the gears as you accelerate and ease off. It also holds the lower gears so you get some engine braking when you lift off whereas you get none otherwise.

... When it reaches its' top speed of 149, it'll be doing 9.9 miles per gallon. Heck, almost into double figures.

It will only be generating peak power as it hits 6,000 RPM, of course, so it's not quite as bad.. Makes you think though. :o

Time to put the damn calculator away.

Hang on - you're playing with your calculator while driving at 149 mph?? :o  I think you should have another look at the Highway Code, cos I think that at least one of those actions isn't recommended.

Anyway, the Sport button on my 2.2 definitely doesn't lock out top (4th) gear; unlike most auto cars I have driven (particularly BMWs and Toyotas).

I spoke to a guy who was driving one of these http://www.ultimasports.co.uk/spyder/index.html at Le Mans once and he said he'd had a bit of a blast one the way down. Had to abort it because he dropped his mobile phone :o. Apparently he was "bouncing off the rev limiter in top" at the time (160MPH speedo had hit the end stop). Suggested he got a higher reading speedo. His response was "after I get a higher geared diff"  8-)

I think my license would last about a quarter of an hour if I ever got my hands on one of those. [smiley=evil.gif]
