Is he still driving it around without and PAS?
NO!!!! it doesnt really go enough to worry about driving it down the road! We are lucky that we live in a very rural area where we dont have to go on public roads to try the "next CURE"!

My money is still on the coolant temperature sensor. A cold engine requires a rich mixture and if the mixture is too lean it will backfire since the mixture burns much slower and can be still burning when the inlet valve opens, which burns the charge of fuel waiting to enter the engine.

If the coolant temperature is reading hot all the time, or the ECU is substituting a "hot" value due to a detected malfunction, the enrichment that is required for proper cold running will not happen.
