Likely to be because a fault has put it into limp home mode. Is the engine management light on? If so, read the fault codes to see what's wrong. If not, bulb may need replacing (does it come on with ignition and extinguish after engine start?).

Does it come on when you turn the ignition on and then go out after a few seconds?

Have you had the car long?  If not it maybe an unscrupulous seller has removed the bulb.
otherwise it may have innocently blown.

You will either need to replace if so you can do the paperclip test to get the fault codes, or use a code reader (and ideally replace the bulb anyway)

Its not hard to remove the dash to do the bulb, there is a guide, basically involves removing centre airvent, few screws then dash comes out so you can replace the bulb.

It's probably something pretty simple like cam / crank sensor as has been said. Main thing is to get the codes out of it and post them up, which means a code reader or a new bulb. Then we'll be able to give you some pointers.

No, when the cam sensor is broken it will not go over 4000 revs in any conditions. This and the engine fault light is the only thinkg you may spot. Later it will not let you start your engine.

Either, you have to replace the bulb or connect other 12V bulb same way as paperclip and read codes. I dont know if it will be 0340 in 97 or is it going to be two digit code, but I also think that it's a camshaft sensor.
New sensor cost ca £20-25 but you have to take the aircon compressor our or try to replace it without moving it (harder but you dont have to take aircon)
Can you please update your profile or let us know where you are located?
