I'm free anytime from now until it's done!! (I don't have a problem with work as I can work any hours within reason)

You let me know when is good for you and I'll be here.

If we can it would be a good idea to do those cam covers at the same time?

Cheers!!     :y   :y

Hi Chaps,

I think i have exactly the same problem as pictured.  I did the cam seals last year and i can't see any oil leaking from them covers, so i'm guessing that's not my problem.  The oil leak on mine looks very simular to the pics on tis thread.  Oil all over the sump flange, under the car, around the sump plug, below the stering pump, around lower pulley from the crank.  I get the feeling that it's the crank oil seal.... :o

So looks like that's two of us then!  I will follow you on this thread as i will be doing the work as soon as i get a cam lock kit and 100000000nm torque wrench.  I'm hoping MarkDTM will loan me the lock once more...  :-*  ('ll bring that laptop up for you as i mentioned last year.)

Cheers

Leaks from the crankshaft front oil seal seem fairly common. Once you get the old seal out there is a spacer behind the crank sprocket that the oil seal runs on, pull this off the shaft and reverse it, you will find it has a groove worn in it and reversing it means the new seal has an un-worn surface to work on.
Do not attempt to un-do the crank bolt by putting it in gear or by jamming the ring gear, you will shear the crank sprocket key-way. You must use a bit of angle iron etc bolted onto the front pulley holes to stop the crank turning.

If you want a hand I have a BIG torque wrench and a crank holding bar. I suggest we attach MarksDTM to the end of the bar. (You get a better class of biscuit when workin at his place)

I know what you mean about the biscuits, last time i was at Marks i got one in a wrapper!  How posh is that?  never got chance to eat it though, was too busy with car.

I'll try and get this on the go as the days get warmer and longer.  Maybe late on in March.  The leak isn't too bad at the moment so i think i can live with it for now.

I'll just PM Mark to beg for the lock kit again.

Cheers

Also i noticed that the color of the leaking oil seems to match the oil on the end of the dip stick.  ie:- it got cleaner each time i changed the oil.

In fact i think the leak was related to the quick oil changes i have just done.  I did x4 changed inside 1k miles.

Hi James...

I remember you showing me that sprocket tool... prophetic as it turns out!!  :)

Do we need a specialist torque wrench to tighten the bolts afterwards??

Please let me know when you can come as I still without my own wheels and need to sort something very soon..

Cheers..      :y

Hi Nick,

I got your PM. I may be able to do something, but given current time constraints it would probably make life much easier if you could strip off the plenum, bagpipes, and belt covers etc before I get there, so all that we have to do is the cambelt removal/refit and the oil seal. I suspect you are confident to do that, having worked on the belt change last time with me?

Cheers

Hi James..

Thanks for the reply but I almost missed it as I was monitoring my PM's and my mobile for a reply..

Stripping down shouldn't be too difficult having seen you do it and having the DVD from this site.. In any case you know how it goes back together again which is the important part!!   :y

The only questions remaining is when? and what parts do you want me to buy to be ready.. ie o rings for plenum, oil seals for crank, gaskets for cam covers.. oil etc etc..

Do we need axle stands, I have a jack at the moment.. but what about a long bar/torque wrench for the crank bolt?

You know that I work away from home and that the car is in S.Wales at the moment,    so a little organising needs to be done - this only involves us making a firm day and time arrangement and a phone call to SWNTBO!! (I can make any day and any time, even Easter!!)

The kettle is on and the biscuits are bought!! Please just let me know when??

Cheers,

Nick    :y
