I to once did the same......ended up washing the engine over and re-fitting the pipes at the block end because in fiddling the pipes out the way it slackened the pipe to block unions reulting in a high pressure oil leak.

No point in cutting corners, the time saved on the cleaning, removal and re-fitting more than makes up for doing the job properly. Particularly as you need to remove the oil filter for an oil change anyway.

You didn't do it properly then ;D
