Brake Pipes
« on: 20 October 2008, 17:45:34 »

Help please
I have had my omega for its mot today and it failed on a few things:
Both front discs excessively scored
Rear and centre exhaust need replacing
Offside front brake pipe excessively corroded
Offside rear (main and to wheel ) brake pipe excessively corroded
Nearside rear (main and to wheel) brake pipe excessively corroded
Nearside front brake pipe excessively corroded
Headlamp bulb ( i have done that now)
One number plate bulb (will do that tonight)

I reckon i can do the brake discs and possibly the exhaust but i dont know diddley squat about brake pipes (except they carry the fluid to the brakes  ::) )
Does anyone know what kind of bill i am looking at for the pipes replacing?????
Even better does anyone in the north east fancy doing them??? ( i will help all i can and offer beer tokens depending on cost? )

Or should i sell it???? Because we only moved house 6 week ago and although i am working my mrs hasnt found a job yet  ** x factor type sob story for sympathy vote  ;) **

Its a 1996 2.5 cdx with tax till the end of the month and test till 13th november? has 130k on the clock everything works even both heated seats and it even has some stamps in the book ( a fair few from memory ) it also has only had 2 former keepers???)
And the spare wheel has never been out of the boot!
If selling is my best option, would it fetch £200????

The garage i had mot done at has quoted £130 for a CASH job?????
Which i thought was a bit bloody steep??
Any ideas please

Thanks in advance
Mick

If the £130 is for all the work, great, if it's just for brake pipes shop around. Trade Club will give good prices on discs and pads.
Selling the car not a real option a) it's worth pence, b) what else could you buy, c) no other model of car has a forum for help like this.

no 130 is just for brake pipes?

I know this is  a great forum and people are great, its just at the mo pennies are a bit tight (as mentioned she hasnt got a job yet and as we are british the great state dont wanna help so i am running the house on my money!!) and for £200 i could get a little piece of rust with a bit tax and test to get me through to january. - i would do without a car but i cant get a bus to where i pick my coach up from.

I would rather fix it though as i love omegas  and this one is cracking but needs must as they say!

So i could really do with some prices on the pipe work please

Intersting thing is that I am yet to see one with truely corroded brake lines....seen plenty with salt crystals on them.

Just go to your local  Motor factor and have them make up the correct length of copper brake pipe, easy job .

Or try a different garage for another MOT, some testers are obsessed with their favourite fault, your guy clearly has a thing for brakes! ;)

Give the pipes a decent clean and look for pitting  .. no pitting = no corrosion, then cover lightly with waxoyl or underseal and resubmit for testing ... :)

My local place is funny about brake pipes too. Each car they've asked me to replace them on I've just rubbed them with wire wool and sprayed with waxoyl as Entwood says, and they pass.

Would be a shame to sell it mate as the rest are service items that are easily changed, why don't you see what the pipes come up like and decide then?

I reckon those pipes will cost about 20 quid all in from a factor.  Assuming no issues with disconnecting them its fairly straightforward, but remember you will need to do a thorough bleed afterwards.

If you can do disks/pads/exhaust, you can do the brake pipes.

Cheers

I have replaced the brake pipes on a veccy so most of it will apply to a meega.

Copper piping was about 30 quid (about 2 years ago mind, might have gone up)
Removing the old piping was easy however it broke so in two pieces so it came off better.
Getting local stealer to shape new pipes based on old ones was about 150 quid for 2.
So I bought the piping hired a pipe bell shaping tool for a tenner ( I now own one, they're fantastic) and refitted the pipes myself.
You might break a couple of the old plastic snap-on mounts so bear that in mind.

Took about 3 hours but then it was my first time.  Have a go it wasnt that hard, just took time to get the routing of the pipes sitting true on the mounts.  When refitting dont force anything, make sure you properly torque the brake union nuts as the copper is a lot softer new than when it is old.  And before you shape the end of that pipe slide on the union bolts first (and the correct way round!) d'oh!  :y

couple of tips I picked up...

Before removing the old pipe, fit a latex glove with rubber bands (bit like a home made jam jar) over the fluid tank filler to minimise fluid loss,  and temporarily replace the pipe union with a suitable sized screw while you are off sourcing the replacement pipe.
